Default V10 itch S6 S8

Recently been looking at S6 v10's and S8 v10's, currently got the A8 D3 4.2tdi with some tuning so not expecting much difference in performance but that v10 engine sounds great, anyone had any experience of moving from the tdi to the v10? I understand the running costs aren't comparible maintainance and economy is double that of tdi just want to see if any of you have any experience of moving from the dark side

I'd get the tdi a good remap and then enjoy it. Definitely not as rev happy as the v10, but so much torque, and your wallet will love you

Yeah PsYcHe, mines remapped and had further work, just wondered if I was missing something with the v10 S' cars, they seemed generally better refined interior wise as well

I agree Roberto, I would even say the 4.2tdi straight through it's similar to an amg v8 sound in a lower rev range, I have no mufflers or dpfs just primary cats still there. I think I'm just looking at say the S6 v10 and thinking £8kish thats cheap but is it worth swapping for that, the v10 sounds amazing undeniable but I wasn't sure if it was worth the hassle of selling the tdi getting the v10 then regretting it

If you are looking for pace and with a view towards economy - settled 4.2TDi is going to be hard to beat.

If you want the spectacle of a high revving petrol engine then no amount of tuning of your TDi will get that!

I've had a few 4.2TDi engined cars over the years. Currently, I have a Q7 (3l 272ps) and a b7 RS4, a V8 with a manual box that revs and pulls to 8250RPM. Point to point, I'd say the Q7 would be faster and more comfortable, but the RS4 leaves me with a grin I will never get from a diesel!

Your thread title was V10 itch, how bad is it, does it need scratching? If so an S6 or S8 is a good answer I'd say the 8 is always going to be more luxurious, a slightly nicer place to be - but the 6 is very close if you need the practicality of Avant obviously wins. At the age of the cars now, I'd say buy on history and condition, you won't regret either when you find that grin.... you may when you realise how long you spend at the fuel pumps though!

That puts it i perspective thanks, totally differents beasts aren't they tdi and v10, it's usually when I hear a v10 i start searching the classifieds. From what I can see the S8 has more interior refinement than the S6 still a lovely looking car.

I had to laugh at some of the comments on here, sorry. Any diesel will never sound like an AMG V8, if you think it does, then maybe gets your hearing checked

Some do sound decent yes, 4.2 TDI Cayennes sound great, but it's still not a petrol V8

I think the answer lies in how many miles you do.

If not many, then get the petrol engined car, no brainer

For the longer miles/daily driver, get a diesel

To be fair, the SQ7 does a good job of sounding like a AMG with a diesel engine, but that's because the sound effectively comes out of a speaker in the exhaust

no cigar

I've owned a C63 M-B, without question the nicest sound car I've owned.

Back to the OP, if you're doing less than 10k miles or so per annum, then get the V10
