Default Facelift Xenons - advice please

Hello there.

I replaced (or rather my garage replaced) the front passenger side self-levelling headlight sensor arm, sourced through our forum's sponsor a while back. I suspect that this delicate little item fractured its plastic arm due to the work performed on the car when my distribution block on the chassis rail started to cause problems. It was full of grunt and needed cleaning. Anyway, I digress. Suffice to say, my dashboard light is still on!

My two-part question is this: Does the calibration definitely need to be run on a VAGCOM unit, and also is there any chance that the unit supplied has been fitted incorrectly?

Whilst browsing t'interweb, I discovered on a VAG forum that someone had managed to fit the sensor pointing one way when it should have been the other way round. Does the Audi unit only fit one way? I'm sure that my fellow learned colleagues on here will clarify things for me ;-)

P.S. Whilst it's not raining, I'm going to tackle my age-old problem of the headlamp washer jets not popping up/activating.

Well I would have thought that at the very least any stored error would need clearing.

I'm sure David's8 will be along shortly. He fixed his broken levelling arm, so he'll know if it needed clearing on VagCom. I doubt if it can be put in the wrong way, but I'm sure he'll know.

If it's been on ever since then they didn't do the basic settings procedure, which requires vcds and takes about a minute.

Headlamp washer jets will most likely be a corroded connector or failed pump - if there's no pump noise (in addition to the screen washer pump) then that's where I'd start. If you hear the 2nd pump run but nothing comes out then pipe work more likely

When you're down this way happy to do the basic settings - did it on mine recently after tapping the wrong button while messing about with modules and then got an error as i hadn't done the whole process!

Default Horley Support Unit in attendance...

I had a good feeling that Adrian might chip in, and there he is :-)

Just took a picture of the headlight self-levelling sensor which I've attached to this post but I'll assume that it is installed correctly. It looks like I'll be crossing Adrian's palm with silver or an offer of something alcohol-based for non-Audi use, of course.

Default No pump noise

Thanks Adrian for the offer of VAG-COM/VCDS for the headlights, and also your valuable input with regard to the pump for the headlight washer jets. I don't hear any noise at all apart from the standard windscreen washer pump. I do know what that 2nd pump sounds like as I had a working version on my old A8. The pump is located in the OSF wheel arch from what I've read and I will inspect the electrical connections armed with my multimeter.

As it's now an mot'able item I booked mine in to camspec and was expecting a chunky bill - they got away with cleaning and lubing the connector and it's worked fine since. If the motor is u/s then the design has changed and they supply a new connector which doesn't corrode to replace it

No need for silver mate - it's very simple to do with required tools if your down my way just drop me a line.

Adrian

I've just met up with Adrian and he hooked up his laptop to my vehicle. There wasn't any value being displayed from the sensor on the NSF. The NSR sensor was working perfectly though. It looks like I'll have to send the unit back ooop north to the forum's sponsors as it was supplied by them a few months back.

Adrian persuaded me to sit on the boot and he was able to see the values changing up and down as expected for the rear sensor. He was also able to wink my headlights up and down under software control which was, as Mr Miggins would say from Fonejacker, 'that's a bit special' lol

The odds of yours failing, and the replacement one being defective are a long shot......

Is there any chance any of the wiring or connector might be suspect ?

Its the same sensor front and rear I believe, if you were up for swapping the two over it might tell an interesting story if the problems moves too... ?

Its not like the rear one is much use when the front one aint working...
