Default It's been short and sweet... but my A8 has died :-(

Well gents...

And so it is with a heavy heart, I declare my A8 dead I am incredibly gutted, but have no choice. I did a 350 mile round trip on Saturday Edinburgh - Aberdeen - Edinburgh, no issue at all, until late on Saturday when I got back. Literally pulled into my street, heard a crazy noise, sounded like plastic trim caught on something. Popped the bonnet, took the covers off...timing belt loose, tensioner gone. From the sound of it the belt jumped at least a tooth or two as well. Can't believe it, have spent a lot of money on her, but I'm done now. I'm reluctantly breaking her unless I'm made an offer I can't refuse to buy whole. Didn't even make it to a meet been a pleasure guys, and hope this never happens to any of you! Got a wee one on the way too now, hence neither the time nor inclination to be doing anything with it. Tomorrow sees me buy a C6 TDI on the premise of hopeful sensibility!

All the best gents, Happy Christmas!

From a 75 year young one who should know better I have shed a tear or three for you. Very sad when things like this kick somewhere painful, but heck, chin up you still have time to have another go as the wee ones grow up. I had to pause my car shenanigans for a long time but with the kids all growed and grandkids well on the upwards trend I have restarted with a 2004 A8 D3 3.0 TDI.
We will be in Edinburgh for New Year, driving up on the 30th, returning on 1st January.
Off topic, we have just had the works 2007 A8 D3 3.0 TDI remapped, added umpty whatever BHP and supposedly improved consumption. Owner has just set off for an overnight Gatwick in her so we will soon know. I expect a speed awareness course coming up!!
Good Luck with everything, just keep the dreams going.

Errrrrrrr...how embarrassing?! Or just weird? The A8 lIves! This morning tried starting it one more, don't really know why... And it's absolutely fine! Turns out the night I got back the hydraulic tensioner had loosened up with heat and the long drive, now it's been cold for 2 days, it's solid again, no play in the belt at all! I was so sure it had slipped from the looseness before but she's running like a dream! Obv needs a new tensioner and timing belt, but all else is good! Selling it anyway as I need to be more practical, but on the basis she needs a new timing kit.

That's good news, obviously not to be used until it's been investigated and rectified but maybe another one saved.
Why not keep it for high days and holidays?

2003 D2 FL S8. Irish Green Pearl/Beige. Solar sunroof, auto-dim mirrors, electric rear seat functions, ski hatch retrofit; extended leather. Aftermarket DVB-T, reversing camera and full XCarlink (Bluetooth etc.).
2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (A much rarer model than a D2 S8 by the way!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

Thanks tc4332 thankfully now though she's not dead, I can't believe it. If you'd heard the racket initially I think anyone would've proclaimed death! I love the D3's, but they're a little out of my range at the moment, and A6 parts are just a heck of a lot cheaper too!

HPsauce...that would be the dream, but my wife will hopefully (somewhat belatedly) have her licence soon, and need funds to put towards another 4 ringed animal!
