Default Quattro in the snow

Yesterday I had my first taste of the quattro system in the snow, and I was impressed with how good the car drove.

I was in Stevenage Herts, where overnight about 4 inches of snow fell and my poor A8 almost disappeared. After digging around the front of the car and clearing the rest off, put the car in drive and it felt like driving on tarmac when pulling away. I managed to get out of the residential street on a hill where others had tried and failed, and I managed it without even a single flash from the ESP light.

I have quiet a lot of experience of these conditions, so took it easy once going as the 4WD gives an odd sensation of having grip when in reality you have no more once rolling than any other car on the road.

This was the view from the bedroom window.

and the A8 under snow.

It's great fun in the snow isn't it? After playing in mine last year i found i had a lot of snow forced between the spokes of the wheels and anything over 30 after that led to massive wheel wobble. Had to stop and clear it, was fine after that.

it would have been good to have some more in depth fun but I needed to get back to Dorset. Sitting here in the living room, looking out the window, here I have no snow to go and have fun in.

That's very true, and what most forget.

You're okay getting traction to move off, but you'll struggle to stop just as much as any other car, and almost as much getting round corners, that's when the right tyres make the difference

Still pretty thick and white here, the S8 performed better than my A4 Avant 3,0 Quattro. Probably due to the wider track and extra weight.

My car was covered yesterday, the snow was 5,5 inches in places, I didn't bother digging her out - I simply cleared the windshield, reversed her out and headed to the ex-US Army air base, with a lovely airfield, where I was able to put the S8 through her paces. Awesome!
