Default Realistic buying price of a s8 d2??

I appreciate that the s8 is now attracting some attention and reviews from classic car magazines and see people stating in adverts that there are as few as 120 currently registered on UK roads (accepting there will be as many stored away somewhere too).
Would people mind please sharing their experiences of either looking for or selling their s8?

As people will be aware, my car is still pending a gearbox rebuild. I keep running the figures for this and finding myself torn between going ahead and knowing that its safe expenditure and will always be recouped should I decide to sell it or accept that I can all but pick up another s8 for the cost of the rebuild? (albeit with a list of expenses pending...)

The curve ball could be that I have the box rebuilt and freshen up the whole car with the intention of saving it from becoming a donor and selling it straight on again. So, that brings me full circle back to the question - what would be the likely resale value of a very fine example of an s8 with a fully built box , service history (including belts etc) and new brakes / tyres etc which would all be done as part of the refresh. I'm figuring that I would need be looking at £5k to be justified?

Over to the people in the know please. Any experiences or thoughts much appreciated. Seasons best to one and all

I'm not "in the know" but as soon as I saw the subject of this thread the words "At least £5K" sprang into my mind.

120 D2 S8s on UK roads or does the figure include D2 A8s too?
Just curious...

Very fine example in ‘as new’ condition should fetch between 5k and 10k in my opinion. If, for example, if seats have no signs of wear at all, including bolsters on drivers seat. That sort of condition. In fact, I’m willing to pay in excess of 10k should this kind of example appear on the market.

You're right about there being just as many SORNed vehicles. Check out the 'How Many Left' site if interested in more details. Here is what is recorded for the Audi S8:

For reference I was in the same position with D2 S8.

The bottom line was I really could not find another car I wanted to replace it, it’s just a very special car that is not going anywhere.

Hence recently spent £3000 for the full works gearbox rebuild after it began to leak and play up a little.

A lot of money but an excellent job was done and part of the process of bringing the old girl back to perfection (Brembo rebuild next!)

For information the work was done at Auto Trans Gloucester.

http://www.autotransgloucester.co.uk

I cannot recommend them highly enough, superb and expert job performed by very thorough and knowledgeable people. I spent a long time talking to them and it was clear they knew ZF boxes well and fully knew the fact this was a 5HP24 box.

Also have serviced my A8 QS box for me and again first rate work was completed.

#1 Avus & Red FE - this needs an engine (which I now have) and a gearbox (manual obvs) then it will be fully restored and sold on, hopefully some time in 2019. Neil has first dibs on this one. It won't be cheap

#2 Black FE shell - this one needs every single steel component replacing as I think it lived in the sea for a while It's beyond economical recovery and donated it's red interior to my grey one, so it is now mothballed should someone ever have a non-repairable accident, at which point re-shelling may be a viable option since the body itself is fine, albeit needing paint.

#3 Avus S8 with red & black (ex Davey Blueeyes) - this one also needs a gearbox so will get a full resto (hopefully also 2019) and then David has the option to buy it back or I will sell it on.

Thanks MK.
Would like an S8 and probably next year but depends on if/when I can get my camper van road legal!

Still - can dream.

NB - what is the full cost for the manual conversion?

The manual swap is likely to be in the order of £4K, depending on gearbox choice, so comparable to a Mackies auto rebuild. I'm expecting completed cars to be worth £8-10K based on values of similar swaps in the US and of course the factory Euro cars being £15K+
