Thanks guys

no jump starts, no problems actually starting

I tried the voltmeter yesterday after having been running, and it said 12.6v

im sitting in the car at the moment having done some tests

this morning before turning over i ran some block tests which showed the battery at

Address 61: Battery Regul. (4E0 910 181 C)

10:32:37 Group 010: Generator

i have now run the engine for 20 minutes while getting new readings while running

Address 61: Battery Regul. (4E0 910 181 C)

after switching off the engine it is immediately

12.00 V Generator Voltage (specified)
12.65 V Battery Voltage (actual)
0.0 % Dynamic-Field Signal
3.00 s Load Response Time

and i sat and watched the scope as it dropped to 12. 5 in aout 3 minutes

great knowing all this , but doesnt help me if i dont know what it should do.

but basically its 12.1v in the morning - and after running and engine off its 12.65 then drops rapidly to 12.5v

all elecs are switched of, i unplugged the harddrive on the ami, MMI off, interior lights and light package and climate are of.

Seems like it's charging ok and the voltage drop off overnight isn't extreme. I would wait until it gets really cold and see if you have any issues and be ready to replace the battery.

Thanks Conan
I was going to replace the battery today, but held of in case everyone thought it might not be at fault. and as the car always actually starts its not a problem to wait.

so you think 12.1 v is okay, and the warnings shouldnt be happening at that level. is it a good idea to take PsYcHe's suggestion and tell it there is a new battery, it should then at least start of at 100%, can it do any harm?

I intended to try telling the car it had a new battery, but went out for sunday lunch first, its raining very hard here in leeds and its a bit on the cold side

so We drove for about 15 minutes (Warning came on as soon as I started up)
Heater on, heated seats on, Lights on, AMI, etc etc

when we arrived i checked the meter, it was 70% , came out and half way back it was at 100%

is it possible that by turning all the electrics on I used power and it kick started the charging process and the energy manager saw it go in.

ive just got back so in a minute im gong out to play, If the above happened and it now see's the 100% it should allow me to use the AMI for more than 3 minutes without the warning.

Everything seems to be normal now, I can run electrics without the engine running with no warnings.

unless it was a coincidence, turning everythin on , rather than yurning them of, seems to have done the trick.

Saved me from buying a new battery

Thanks for your help, il let you know if it stays this way.

Nick

Its been fine since the last post 11 days ago, but yesterday went back to 10% after a couple of short runs , and refuses to go back up despite a trip from Leeds to London and back.

Have Coded the car for a new battery (just changed the serial number) and its back to 100% , see how it goes for a while, if not a new battery is in order

I will do if it goes again, so far after the vagcom update of 61 for a new battery it is going well. the only thing that stops me from doing it anyway, is the fact that it has never failed to start or even had a problem starting

Reviving this thread

As the cars been down to IVC for a check up and a few bits doing i thought i would get a new battery as the above problem still happens, couple of short trips and its down to 10%,

I just called to see how the cars doing and they tell me they didnt fit a new battery as my one is fine, nothing wrong with it. so where does that leave the problem?, ive asked them to recheck the energie manager as i cant think what else it could be,

i suppose i could try disabling the battery meter, dont see what good it would do, but maybe audi had this turned of in the later MMI updates for this specific reason. wont cost anything to try.

anyone got any other idea's

Ignore the MMI battery meter... It lies! That's why it was turned up in the MMI updates.
