No, he's in the UK and its only free labour. But he specialises in Range Rover transmissions, so may not be willing to work for Audi owners. Chances are also that enough people have sought to abuse his charity that he may not be doing this at all now.

Thanks everyone, I've made a few phone calls today, ZF themselves were really helpful and a technician they suggested checking the oil level, Dave at A8 Parts suggested checking viscosity (and he doesn't have my gearbox in stock), my mechanic suggested that it might be an electrical fault.

I'm still expecting the worse, but I now think that I'll go down this route: get the error codes checked (doesn't a faulty MAF cause gearbox problems?), get the oil checked for viscosity and levels, and if none of those come up with a soultion I will resign myself to the fate of burning a hole in my bank balance.

(and the worst thing: the guy at the body shop said to me that the looked fantastic for it's age and asked if it was low mileage)

MAF can cause gearbox nonsense, but if you've just had it done, chances are it wasn't done right.

My local indy will only do a gearbox if he can have the car overnight to make sure it's all up to the correct temperatures as it's easier to get it there going up then cooling down. They are also really sensitive to the correct oil, so if they haven't used the Audi oil (or the Esso equivalient) it could go all wrong.

So should I take the car to a ZF Specialist or to an Audi specialist - I'm not sure which one to use at the moment!

definately ZF auto box specialist rather than Audi, many of them will sub it out to a ZF or auto specialist anyway. I ended up buying a VAG service exchange box through TPS at trade price in the end but at least it got me a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty and everything was new including torque converter, transfer box, TCU and even oil in the new box.

Chester Auto Transmissions....

They *only* do transmissions, and from my experience, they do them well. When I last went, they had a special thing to suck the oil out of the box and oil pipes, meaning they get a far higher percentage of the old oil and crud out...
