Which is roughly what I paid for my Mackie re-manufacture recently (including a new 'F125 switch' and diff oil change):
http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=12203 Well worth it, in my opinion, if the car is otherwise a good 'un, especially considering the 3 year warranty and the peace of mind that gives. I think it all depends on your perspective: Do you scrap it because the repair is more than the car is worth? ... Or, do you consider what the (presently) low purchase price of these cars has saved you as a way of funding the cost of running and repairing it? Walnut or Maple?

Only have myself to blame. Only a couple of days before hand, whilst chatting with a stranger / car enthusiasts walking his dog I made the basic mistake of saying
"Truth told, apart from slightly more fuel, this car hasn't cost me any more to run than any of my last 20 odd cars. And look what I'm driving!!"

Damn that sucks 2002 isn't it? No used gearboxes about it seems.
Brave enough for a diy repair? Parts are easily available, and there are a few good write-ups on forums. The hardest part is getting it out and back in. Should be less than £1K to just fix a broken drum rather than doing a full rebuild. My '99 was the cheapest to maintain & most reliable car I ever had right until the gearbox went pop. |

The perceived value of the car is largely irrelevant if it holds a personal value to me.
You don't make money from cars, so basing repair costs on what the car is worth doesn't make a lot of sense if you want to maintain your car in good condition. So ask yourself some questions: Do you like your car? Have you looked after it? If you don't own this car, what will you own? How much will you spend to get there? Will that car depreciate in value or have its own large expenses? Will it be step up, or a step down? Do you particularly want some other car more than the one you have? And can you afford to get it? I run a very simple philosophy with cars: Do I like it? (The answer is usually yes as I don't tend to buy cars I don't want ;-)) Am I invested in it? (This usually means that I've put time and effort into maintaining and improving it, but can also be as simple as having owned it a while and become associated with it) If the answer to both is yes, then the question becomes: Can I afford or otherwise get hold of the cash needed for the repair? I tend not to factor the market value of the car into its expenses - it costs money to run cars, I accept that.
