Default Does anyone know what this is called?

Does anyone know what this is called (Its no 1 in the pic the small piece of plastic which its approx 2cm in length), its what connects the two actuator valves on facelift models together. Mines broken so this is taken from a 4.2 S6 but its exactly the same. Couldn't find a part number on it, is this listed on Ekta? If so at what price? Thanks in advance.

Can't remember what it's called, but there was a thread on it on AudiWorld a while back.

It's a bellows actuator arm or something like that, by the sounds of it a reasonably common issue.

Mate, as I said before, it's the variable inlet manifold change-over valve actuator. A8 parts had them but a repair kit from Audi was, I'm sure, about £160!!

It is very common and that's what I put in Audi Driver.

It will be dramatically reducing power at lower revs and responce from pull away.

Dead easy to swap tho, just one pipe to it and one securing nut (next to vac pipe feed in). You can't buy just the connecting bar from Audi unfortunately.

Cheers Ben, I couldn't find the invoice where you wrote it on and didn't want to keep bugging you with texts on your day off!
I couldn't get the acctuator valve off, its a 13mm nut but my ratchet wouldn't fit However I managed to get the arm off, so was hoping I could just replace that. It's dramatically reduced power alright, I sometimes have to check if kickdown is working thats how sluggish its feeling. Will get a new one first thing tomorrow and fit it. Thanks.

Yup, they're a very common failure point, and causes a weird flatspot in the torque curve as you pull through the revs...

Many, many people have 1 or both broken and dont even know it

There was a long running thread on Audiworld somewhere as someone was trying to manufacture aftermarket replacement arms for the problem - Thats how common it is

The write-up Ben mentions above was from my car... unfortunately that wasn't the only problem with my car. To Ben's credit he is still working on it though.

R8 Dream was telling me that it opens up a flap which releases more torque or something? What if it was always jammed open? Not that I'm going to do it, will be on to A8 parts tomorrow for a new one, also got another subtle cosmetic mod to do on the S8 on Tues, watch this space!
P.S BEN, just took the S6 for a blast and OMG that thing moves after you worked on it.. Magic fingers indeed lol.

OK, this could get boring but.....

A naturally aspirated engine has different requirements throughout the rev range to achieve it's best. At low RPM the manifold flaps make the entering air travel around the whole snail-shape within. This a long, smooth tract into the engine. This causes the air speed to increase and which improves the air speed and swirl within the cylinder. This is increasing the efficiency of the burn and so improving torque. However, as the engine speed risesthe need for air changes as the engine's speed ensures a good swirl and fast input of air, at this point, a long, winding inlet tract restricts the amount of air allowed into the engine. Thats when the flaps open in turn, one at around 3000rpm that about halves the length of the inet tract, then the second at about 4800 rpm, this give the shortest possible path into the cylinders and so allows a greather amount of air in for high top end power.

The actuators are just opening and closing 2 big flaps inside as required. For best results you want the system working correctly.

Here's a few internal pics......
No there's not cos it wont let me upload em...?
