Maybe an SA-spec S8 has different gearing to UK?

2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (A much rarer model than a D2 S8 by the way!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

Well his is A8 not S so it has higher gears and better economy.

But as I said I struggle to get over 21 mpg in any petrol car. 1.8=21mpg. 2.8=21mph, 4.2=17mpg for me.

Mine is S, yes and I am doing 16-19mpg.

Thread starter IT has A8 claiming 30mpg. It might be doable on highway but I never managed under 21mpg on anything over 1.8

My realisation a couple months ago was that enjoy changing and driving different cars more than I need to drive a nice one. This is why I took the descision to move on, what was a perfect car.

if you're constantly changing cars, having all the spec all the time becomes less important. Trying different stuff is more interesting.

My theory is already working out. The w12 I was using a couple of weeks back had my ami in it, with my USB stick, with my music, but on Bose.

I was totally convinced that with some volume, the b & o wiped the floor with Bose, and I'm right.

What became apparent driving the w12 for 500 miles was that all my music sounded really flat and lifeless, no matter what the volume. I'd become so used to b&o it was no longer special - until I heard bose again.

If I just stuck with the b & o, I'd have never realised how good it really was.

My grand plan is to take on board audis with fatal sounding faults, that cause owners to sell cheap, that with my experience, are cheap to fix. Mend, sell on, trade up and upgrade, trying different stuff in the process.

So far, so good

Thanks for explanation Ian. Now I understand the grand plan. I hope this strategy will work financially and will give you a joy of trying different car every time.

Ian, I like your idea too. If there was a cheap way I could own a BMW M5 (E39) for a few weeks I would be very happy. A manual and RWD, should make a nice difference from 4WD. Plus I want to find out what all the fuss is about.

It's a bit crap but I've got a bit of a vibration to sort out at the minute and it was a short bit of busy motorway

Cool, But 2100 rpm vs 2600 is a smaller difference than I was expecting. Those 50 extra ponies must be sapping more juice than I thought.....
