Just to go back a few days (don't come on the forum for a week or so... ) to the chain tensioner discussion:

I assume you've come across the Chinese versions of the chain tensioner in your browsing.
What's your thoughts on these at less than a quarter the price of genuine ones?

Example for those who were unaware:

I think they use the metal Chinesium. It a mix of bake bean tins, recycled bicycles and wood glue. They can be made on the other side of the world and shipped here for next to nothing because the manufacture pay peanuts and have saved money by having no quality control process.

Agreed ^ I would rather live with the rattle than fit a Chinese tensioner. They are known to leak oil from the outside of the tensioner, such is their total lack of quality control Given that this part is directly responsible for your engine not self-destructing, I wouldn't risk it.

Rebuilt OE is the best way to save money I think. I just need to figure out how to get them apart...

MJ, have you ever thought of doing a TV show with Ed China?

I think my stuff may be a little niche for Edd We do share the same taste in gloves though.

Take a look at this lovely genuine air filter. Marvel in it's filteryness, for it is almost the last one ever No more in Germany, five remaining at various TPS branches around the UK, which will shortly be in my stock. The really stupid thing is that I'm paying the same for the genuine filters as decent aftermarket

Pretty much back together now. It just needs the ECUs hooking back up and the front panel putting on and its ready to start

I'm changing all the cooling components, including the thermo-switch in the radiator. For that, the radiator has to be removed from the front panel, and to do that requires tackling these rusty nuts on the bottom. They are always seized to the stud, and you can't just wail on them because they are part of an NLA rubber bushing which will snap.

Slice the nut in to bits without damaging the stud:

then it comes off relatively easily. I'll clean up the threads with a die before it goes back in

The radiator was already sitting flat from when I drilled out the broken bolt so I could just lift off the front panel

Front panel - this needs cleaning before it goes back on

This is the switch. Also NLA, of course. I'll replace it with a branded aftermarket unit. You can see one of the rubber bushings in the bottom left of the pic. I do have an aftermarket source for these as they are pretty ubiquitous in industrial machinery.

Not sure if anyone else has noticed the protective cover on the inlet manifolds? When I bought the car, they’d been sprayed red and the paint was flaking. I stripped it off and repainted them in a high temperature ‘aluminium’ spray paint which was a close as I could find to the original colour. Then one my local Audi independent garages used them as a tool tray whilst replacing the viscous fan, and scratched them pretty badly. But MJ still covers them whils she works on the engine!

NOooooooo!
So if I go to the Audi dealer today they won't be able to order an air filter? Why would they stop making a service item?
That's terrible! Is there an aftermarket filter of equal quality?

That's correct. The filter is unique to the D2 so no longer available as part of Audi's effort to kill off the older models.

The oil filter is also used in the Q7 up to 2008 so we have a few years left of those. Its likely the cabin filter will also go extinct fairly soon though.

There are still five air filters left around the country if your local dealer / TPS are prepared to do an inter-branch transfer. Mine are, but I think not all of them will. I'm going to hoover up those last few on Monday and then look at aftermarket ones to compare quality. Hengst and Mann make some original stuff for VAG so I'll start there.

It's alive!! Started first time obvs

Bit of an epic thread fail today though - I left my phone at home so no pictures

I put the front panel and radiator back on and filled up all the fluids, then Mike came over with his rivnut tool and we sorted the starter junction box, after which it fired right up with no nasty rattle

We then put new upper control arms on and put all the suspension back together which took the rest of the day. I'll have to grab some photos in the morning.

Tomorrow, bumper, arch liners and the rest of the engine bay trim back on, wheels back on, and road test
