Is it? The owner's manual says that the main purpose is to heat the cabin and de-mist the windows... but what you say would explain why my cabin doesn't get very warm at all when the Aux heater is on

Is the engine running?

If the outside temp is high the system will only operate in ventilation mode with the heater staying off. Also if the fuel level falls below quarter of a tank, or the battery falls below a certain voltage, the aux heating system will automatically shut down.

Well that could be it.. it's possible it was too warm when I tested it. What's the threshold, 5 degrees?

Scott I was testing it on it's own without the engine running.

The cabin wont get hot then.
You might not have the correct pump fitted to the heater.
So all its going to do is boil the water around the heater.

You need the pump or engine running to move the hot water around the system and into the heater matrix to benefit from it.

Mine gets up to temp with in 5mins with the heater running.
Almost 15/20 with out it.

EDIT: I did read that the aux heater will lock it self out if it gets to hot and wont work again till the error is removed via VCDS. That might have been on here somewhere.

So did all earlier models (before the aux heater was dropped) have the pump fitted? Otherwise what is the point of having a timer to run it? Does the owner's manual assume there is a pump?

AFAIK, none had the pump and shutoff valve or MMI options as standard.
They just had the webasto as a supplementary heater than runs when needed.
An option was available to upgrade it to a parking heater with the above added, but it was dropped in the UK on later models ~2008 but as the PDF above speaks about the changes up to 2010, I think they were available in other countries.

It is easy to add the MMI options to fire it up manually or set a timer but as the coolant is not flowing it just heats itself up and then shuts down. After it has done this three times it may block out and need an adaptation to reset the safety lockout. the pump is just a standard webasto part and plugs into the heater itself.

It was more common in properly cold countries. SWMBOs X5 has the timer option.

The full auxiliary heater package was never in any UK D3 brochures, and it was never included by default on any UK D3 to my knowledge.

The Webasto, which is admittedly a large component of it, was standard fitment on all TDi D3's.

Its frustrating that the UK owners manual bangs on about a feature that wasn't very easy to order in this country.

There was a W12 D3 for sale recently, UK (or at least RHD) that had the full kit on including remote control, but it was a very expensive exclusive spec so I guess they just kept hunting out items to charge that customer for......

It was the same story on the A8 D2, but as we didn't get the Tdi over here its less known about, but again the webasto was fitted to every Tdi D2, and again the full auxiliary heating was an extra order on top.

Its quite a common option to see on German A8's.

This shouldn't be confused with the 'resting heater' function which is where an already warm car will electrically circulate the hot coolant round with the blowers on to keep the car warm with the engine switched off. The resting heater has been on every A8 as standard since 1997.......

I think the mod to fit the pump and complete the aux heater has to be one of the best mods ever - I just need to keep a car long enough to justify it

IT, What's the resting heater?
I've seen it/used it on the Touareg but not seen it on the D3.

Really need to do the Aux heater mod, I got the MMI options which is useful during the cold mornings and short commute trips.

Am I right in thinking that you don't have to add the remote control function. You can get away with just the pump and pipe work?
