Diesel in the Oil
Folks
Bit of a strange one! My mate has a 2005 facelift 3.0TDi (non DPF - car has dont 130k miles) and every 4,000 miles or so (he's doing a big mileage) there is Diesel getting into the Sump to the point he is having to drain the oil and refill to stop it getting too full. There is no fault codes for the Injectors (Injectors have been suggested as the fault) but also, if the Injectors were spraying in so much fuel that the bores are being washed with Diesel and getting into the Sump, surely there would be loads of smoke, which there isn't! Any other suggestions please? TIA

Breather system or bore wear/stuck rings would be my only suggestions - can't be many other ways for diesel to get into the sump if you've already excluded the injection system?

Short journeys with cold engine will get you some diesel in oil. if he mostly drives couple of miles at the time it could very well be that.

Diesel injector body/ies has/have started to leak? between sections from the body seals which would spray straight into the valve gear chamber and dilute the oil.

With that milage I'd be horrified to think there was bore wear on an Audi engine? The Injection 'system' is not totally excluded, it's just been pointed out that if it was due to exessive fueling/spray it should be smoking which it's not. I too wondered about Breather somewhere, but can't think what breather that could allow Diesel into the oil that could be! Cheers Norman

No mate, his normal skip to work is over 50 miles, so shouldn't be due to that.

Does the body of the Injector pass through the Rocker area 'naked'?

The injector is made of 2 or 3 sections crimped together with seals. I have heard of the bodies of BOSCH piezo injectors leaking on other cars but not Audis, but as our cars get older it is more likely I suppose. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_Y3dM8ZApo |

I know we are talking Audi here! but Bmws suffer from the High pressure pump leaking into the crankcase! which is usually the seal on the high pressure pump which fails, just a thought? cheers Dave
