Handbrake - On my old A8, I needed to change the handbrake cable, I think there was also a seized caliper which didn't help. Not to costly, got A8 parts to send the cable and caliper to me next day and a local indie to fit.

ABS - This is most likely a sensor.

First of all, you will need to VAG COM the car to find out which sensor is playing up. If I remember correctly, there are four sensors. VAG COM will bring back something such as 'FRONT RIGHT SPEED SENSOR' take the ABS sensor out and clean it, this should do the trick but in my experience it will eventually fail, mine did last another 4/5 months though after a clean (wire wool & water - You may want to use WD40 if the dirt is quite stubborn). I managed to get a new one for free from a bloke that crashed an S8 in my area. They are a doddle to fit. You just need to remove the lining under the arch and unplug the old and fit the new.

I wouldn't recommend driving with no ABS, if you have to brake hard. It could be dangerous, best to get it sorted.

Hope this helps buddy

EDIT: See here on how to remove/clean dirty ABS sensor.

If my memory serves me correctly the handbrake replacement process is quite fiddly. It involves removing the propshaft and other bits to route the 2 new cables.

I'll see if I can find the process when I get Elsawin to work!

Are these auto adjust, or can they be tightened?

Mine is getting pretty loose now and is definitely worse since I changed the rear discs and pads.

They are auto adjust. Only need adjusting on fitting of new cable to ensure they are not on to tight.

New pads mean that brake calliper doesn't have to move as far to engage so a stretched cable will need to have more handbrake leaver movement. If it ain't holding you on a steep hill it's time to replace. Not to expensive. GSF do the cables for about £30.

Any idea what the special tool for this is?
I'm assuming it'll be in a decent mechanics standard kit

The "special tool" is in fact a 14mm socket on a long extension bar - look back on this thread to conans earlier post and there is a picture of it
