WIFI networking advice wanted
Any geeks or nerds (not even remotely dorkish) out there can help me with a project please?
I am now living in a mess without internet. I have offered to build a WIFI net for them as the have internet connection to a single PC. My idea is to place 3 WIFI stations at each corner of the building so that their footprints overlap giving complete coverage. I have set up a wifi router at the PC and its footprint reaches only 40 mtres. So i'm thinking 3 WIFI stations, one handling DHCP and wired together to the internet connection. Is it feasible? Yep...
If it's in Rosyth, then I can maybe pop over and help you get it set up. Ideally what you want are access points rather than routers (though it can be done with these too and probably cheaper). You want to make sure that they don't have the same frequency channel. Ideally, you want to use 1, 6 and 11 though with 4 points you'll end up with an overlap, just make it two diagonally opposite units and that won't be so bad.

I'm going to go with base stations on different freqs as they are cheaper than range extenders and I will need less if they are wired together.

We can still do it that way... Just don't need to use the routing functionality and have the ethernet connection to the centre in one of the LAN ports.
Just make sure that they give out a different IP range for DHCP (batches of 50 should be OK), the same SSID and encryption.

Another option is to use 'ethernet over power' to feed the different areas then connect these to the WiFi router - give you an even better spread and signal strength too (use this in my 3 story house and it works a treat

Good thought Andy.. Got them in the house too, they're great.
200mbit units are about 40 quid a go now, so you'd need 4. Just need to watch out on how the mains is fed around the building as any change in phases, etc will kybosh it, but a damn sight easier than running great big Cat-5 cables around the place.

Any recommendations as to a good set of Powerline (or whatever they are called) units? There appear to be so many on the market it is very hard to know which ones to go for. Thanks Niall

i'm using the NetGear HDX101 units.. Just plugged them in and away they went, got 2 downstairs and 1 upstairs on a seperate ring main and no issues.
