TCM can fail, RS6 ones do. They can be repaired though to bear in mind.

Depends on your budget, if keeping it rebuild entirely.

does sound like a clutch basket as mine did it ( check my posts for pictures of it )

I could drive mine just about but felt like it was stuck in 5th rather than 3rd...

Just drove to Bens (60 miles) took it easy, first part of the journey it drove fine like nothing was wrong with it and no limp mode. 1,2,3,4,5 gears all smooth then I had to stop to pay the M6 toll and the car slammed into gear and jerked and all box lights lit up again. Turned of car and restarted, it struggled to get moving a little like it was revving in neutral while slightly going forward then slammed into gear before continuing the rest of the journey quite smoothly. I tested the tiptronic
at 40 and gears changed smoothly. 3,4,5. So the problem only really occurrd from standstill. I didn't push it hard at all though.
It's in Bens very capable hands now. Thanks for accomdating me at such short notice mate, see you tomorrow for the newly aquired A8s ATF/health check and maf change

if it worked properly for some distance it might not be completely goosed? clearly something big can't have dropped off in the gubbins if it drives! Cross your fingers and hope its just fluid level.....best of luck!

That sounds just like what mine is doing, Ben can tell you the horror story . I would be very interested to know how (if) you resolve this one as it might shed some light on my situation other than having to replace the gearbox which unfortunately i cannot afford at the moment.

Ben thinks he may have found the problem, he pressure tested the gearbox and there was a blockage which he flushed out, next thing he is going to do is an ATF change with Audi oil and all associated O rings, seals, gaskets, strainer etc may do the trick but its not 100% yet. Hoping for good news, but preparing for the worst!

Box is very poorly, had the opportunity to buy a very nice final edition S8 with a rebuilt box just recently and guess what? I passed on the opportunity. You wouldn't believe why, but I really love the green now, it went from hateish to love. It looks stunning and its possibly the only D2 around in this colour so that makes it even more special, so I can justify pouring money into my car.

Has anyone used these guys?

They are a ZF agent and a quick chat on the phone has filled me with a lot of confidence already, not to far from Ben's place either. So I'm ready to go ahead with this now. Is the gearbox super duper smooth after the rebuild then or won't I notice a difference? It was fine beforehand, no hunting or slipping, it came out of nowhere.

Looks ok, but they only give a 12 month warranty.

They have quoted me £995 for a complete rebuild of the gearbox and torque converter and can have it all done in 3 days. I have searched them and they come up good on forums and are part of this company. http://www.vmtp.co.uk/
The fact they are a ZF agent and the service I received over the telephone from the gearbox specialist leads me to believe this is a good company. The 12 months warranty isn't as good as JT automatics but these guys are only 20 mins from where the car is now (AVP) whereas JT are 2 1/2 hours away so transport costs could sting me and I don't know much about JT auto transmissions either..

Tony, I think the next discount you could perhaps work on could be these guys? I could ask them depending on the service I get.

I'm just wondering as my one is giving me some trouble (still drivable) but not great all the same.
