Interesting. Did they strip and rebuild the 'brain' so to speak Amar? Reason I ask is there were a few revised parts for the ZF 5 speed that's all.

Fingers crossed for you

Oil wise, go with what your automatic specialist that YOU trust recommends. My Merc 5 speed has just had it changed as well as the electrical connector which the oil leaks past and the sump plug. Massive difference and he didn't use Mercedes oil, he used what he thought was best and the car is a different animal. It was smooth before!!

I think what you have to be careful is of being an internet mechanic where everyone else thinks they are an automatic specialist as their car has been done and it's currently fine. Find a recommended specialist (Chester I know are excellent as are C&S Transmissions in Thornaby and the chap in Billingham) and let them do their work. If that makes sense!!!

I had a chap the other day adamant that I had to alter the IAT values map on his car as he had read about this on a forum that this would produce more power from the car. Wouldn't listen to me though as he had read that!

I love that S8 in green BTW. Very very unique.

Got the car back and first thing I did was put it in some fuel, £107s worth, ouch. Already had 6 litres or so in too. Next thing I did was clean it up, tomorrow I need to have four new tyres fitted and balanced and still need to screw little bits and bobs in from my RNS E install. Good to have it back and everything seemed okay. I didn't think the car felt as quick though, maybe its just me. Perhaps someone with a facelift S8 could drive it for me and compare? Ian/Darren?

hi amar. glad you got it back ok. we have all had our fingers crossed for you. at least it has been in good hands. £107 in fuel, guess fuel is not cheap near you. most i have had in mine to a fill was £91 and it said i had no fuel left. if your coming to the annual meet then there is a plan for us to have some runs down a timed drag strip. maybe we could have a run or two together. i would like to see if it makes my car any faster when i put my gearbox into "squirt mode"

Has the gearbox coding been changed?

Good news!

Not changed the gearbox coding as it's the same box, just re-con'd and the only coding diferences would make it stay in limp and not run at all. The gearbox ECU is not in the gearbox, it's in the car so has remained unchanged.

Glad to have got her back to you mate, she felt quick enough to me! I think that old A8 you've bought has spoilt you as I was AMAZED by it's throttle response when I tested it!! I think the revert back to Drive By Wire and smoother operation is fooling you - the S8's a quick motor chap! Sounded fan-chuffin-tastic when you left!!

You could hear it? I only pootled off as was waiting for the engine to warm up. My missues needed to fill her car up (Corsa) and we swapped cars, so she pulled up by the entrace to the shop in my S8 and I by the pump in her Corsa and started putting fuel in and some guys in an old coupe Vauxhal were all checking the S8 out and saying 'S8...' I laughed as they saw her walk upto me and pass me the keys.

That's a good point, it probably is the drive by wire thing as it seems to be a minuscule delay just on the off and the pre facelift doesn't have this. Must be a little quicker since you drove it Ben now the new manifold arm is in. It sounds a lot different now though, I can't think why, I mean really different. More like the A8. Less of a growl but still really good, I think I will invest in a good exhaust setup soon, want to keep my tips though..!

Good to hear.

Ah right yes, keep forgetting this is a 360bhp one. On the 340bhp coding can be changed for different programs.

Did I say it drove slow earlier? Hell no.

I have just drove to Coventry and back and it drove so well and fast, it was on a real roll today. I didn't go bonkers as you may expect at my age, I'm actully quite safey concious, but I had as much fun as it was safe to do so.

A few days earlier I did this same journey in my sisters MK4 Golf GT TDI 130 1.9 TDI and went around a roundabout at about 40 and it felt horribly un composed and 'wobbly' today I took it in the S8 at 55ish and oh my god, it gripped and went around it so well, I then dropped it down a gear via the tiptronic to third and accelerated down a slip road like a bat out of hell overtaking a Focus that had joined rather aggressively so I am assuming he had his foot down (Two lane slip road) and making it look like it was being reeled backwards.

Came home along some country roads and it just flew, and now for some reason, its actually got an exhaust note/noise, it never used to. It's defiantly not my imagination either.

The gearbox though, it doesn't seem smoother in the slightest, just the same as it was before it blew up, but it was very good beforehand so I'm happy with that.

Hey there,

How have things been going? Any issues to report, or has the job been a total success?

Everything seems to be going fine so far, invoice came through the post today, £1204. I am certain they said £1004 on the phone, I paid by card over the phone so only just noticed now. I have done about 180 miles and its just as smooth as it always was.
