The article is rather vague on that, but from other articles relating to the issue (other manufacturers as well), it seems to be the drivers airbag.

About the only saving grace that I can gleam from the article linked to by C4R 100N, is that it is a government website, and it states that:

"Audi Australia will offer to buy back the registered vehicle"

It doesn't specifically state that the car must be taken off the road. It just seems to be worded like any other vehicle recall, although it does stress the possible fatal risks.

The article quotes MY 1998 to 2000, which, to me says early facelift, which would rule yours out.

There was a different style steering wheel on those model years, with the later facelift late 2000 onwards having a smoother finish with recessed buttons.

This being the likely case, swapping the steering wheel for a later one is a reasonably trivial operation to be honest, not that I suspect it would affect your PF steering wheel....

The PF cars had firstly driver and passenger airbags, followed by front seat side air bags, and later rear seat side airbags. PF never had roof airbags (as already noted) but all facelift did from MY 1998

The PF airbag controllers were pretty obedient at simply coding in/out the side airbags as desired as we saw seats from various eras swapped about with/without the various airbags in place, but the drivers airbag was always present so couldnt ever be coded out from memory, so disconnecting the drivers airbag causes the airbag warning to illuminate.

Disconnecting the airbag module, has a special connector which when removed from the module, will also cause the airbag warning light to illuminate, but can be worked around if you have the time and patience. Not an action I would recommend though....

If it were me I would suggest that the buy back price is enough to buy a Jasper Green D2 S8 with all the facilities yours has, without the airbag problems! Or fix it; which ever is the cheapest. They are only offering to buy it back to save them repairing it.

I just read on a FB group that affected vehicles will be blocked from being registered - if that's the case then simply ignoring the recall is not an option

From an AU motoring site: a total of 3960 cars are affected across the following model lines in the Audi recall:

1997-2000 Audi A4
1998-2000 Audi A6
1998-2000 Audi A8
1999-2000 Audi TT
1998-1999 Audi Cabriolet

That's Australia only so far.

Airbags can't be sent by air freight as they are pyrotechnic devices so I am investigating specialist dangerous goods couriers to see if they can help. The passenger side dash bag is different between LHD and RHD so the UK may be the only useful source of those. I'm hoping we don't get a recall of them too, since supply may be rather limited if we do. Thats assuming we can even ship one to you of course...

Yes IT, it is a lovely car. I am trying to not get too attached to it though in the face of the recent developments regarding the Takata airbag safety recall...

Up until this development I was still pinching myself to make sure my good fortune at having come into ownership of this vehicle was real.

I really hope that the drivers airbag is the only concern. That is not clear from what I can tell.

Not a total loss but I am surprised at how upset that I am over the prospect of relinquishing this car...

Sadly IT, my vehicle identification nuber is in the list of affected vehicles, so definitely not ruled out, and quite probably on some registration watch list.

My wheel has no buttons. The facelift steering wheels may well be unaffected.

I would jump for joy if the problem went away with a steering wheel swap!

I think my car has 6 airbags; drivers, passenger, both front seats and two in the rear...

I see that on quattroworld forum and other US forums that people have had success with the airbag instrument cluster telltale light by using 47k ohm? resistors and other tricky wiring modifications. I don't know how that will go in this situation though...

Thanks for all of your thoughtful input.

Conan, I am definitely going to approach Audi in some way along the lines you have mooted. They seem a little lazy. I find it hard to believe that rectification would be cheaper than market value.

From the talk that I see from them, they see to be intimating that they would need to engineer a solution and test their efforts, making a fix uneconomical???

The part number for the airbag seems to linger past the dates they mention for different models so there may be hope.

Sadly Mark, judging by what I read on one receipt, the previous owner (he owned it for 15 years) asked for a quote to replace the airbags in 2015.

Either way, I think that there should definitely be more options open to owners of affected vehicles, especially considering that many vehicles of that age may now be cherished, expensively maintained/restored classics. Legally decommissioning the airbags should certainly be an option but manufacturers should also offer subsidised replacement airbags, enabling owners who still wish to replace their airbags to do so at a reduced cost.
What a sensible idea! One that I am certainly going to suggest to Audi when I reluctantly approach them about this issue.
