Default Cooling system problems?

I thought I'd better continue this in the D2 section.

My car went in to Audi Technik yesterday to have the cooling system checked, but it came back 'all clear'.

But, the car is still running fine at motorway speeds, sticking to a steady 90C, but then in slower traffic the needle starts to rise towards the next mark on the gauge (BTW, what do those marks represent - see photo - they're not obvious intervals to me, so I don't know if it's heading up to 95C or 100C).

IIRC (and I may not be right) it used to sit at 90C all the time.

What about other D2s out there - a steady 90C regardless, or does it move up and down a bit?

Mine's rock steady on the midpoint of 90 (even though, as Mark/Moltuae pointed out @ Wigan, my coolant is below minimum ). But 98% of my driving is motorways or fast A roads, so I'm probably not a good comparison. Maybe a problem with the radiator, I guess?

I've no idea what the gradient marks mean, as it doesn't seem to be a linear scale...

Mine is always 90C.

I have had thermostat problem when I purchased the car, and it didn't warm up no matter how hard the car was driven. The needle went to 70C - 80C and stayed there.

Edit: I would change sensor that starts radiator fan. It is located at the bottom of for radiator, on driver side corner of radiator and is facing the engine. Can be changed with the bottom plastic shield out when the car is on ramps.

The garage checked that the fans were coming on when they should, and I can see that both are running when the engine is hot.

Now, I have a small confession and I wonder if this is relevant. I had a very tiny leak in the radiator and threw in a bottle of Radweld. It's cured the leak, but could this be causing the over-heating issue?

My previous S8 always stayed exactly at 90 even in Spain. The current one started creeping above 90 only on one day when it sat in traffic in London on a hot summer day. After that it went for a belt change and had a new thermostat and waterpump, hasn't done it since. So it could have been either of those. And I think its had a new viscous fan clutch too.

That is helpful Gordon. If everyone else has a constant 90C then I definitely have a problem.

Bang on 90 for me, in every Audi ever. In fact, if I never saw them warm up from the far left, I swear it was just a sticker...

Same here.

Always rises to 90 then stays there .... apart from when I had a coolant temp sensor fault (when the needle stuck at zero), and the time I lost all of my coolant while right-footing it down the motorway (causing the gauge to move up slightly).

I wonder if your thermostat is sticking a little, or opening late. It's possible the Radweld is responsible if that's the case, especially if it started happening just after that.

Might be worth checking the temp with VCDS (assuming VCDS can read the CTS temperature - never tried it myself) just to confirm whether the ECU is seeing the same temperature the gauge is reporting ... though I suspect it will be.
