...So I guess I own 12% of all the '01 and '02 S8's in the country
And IT (Ian) has owned 12% of the D2s in the UK.

No,no,no, Sean! - It's only 11% if you don't double count the one(s) he's owned more than once!

Wow, just looked up historic Forex data for 2001 - the Aussie dollar really tanked at that time! $2.90 to the £ for a while... Just over $3 very briefly...
So £59,275 becomes $178,000! Price starts to make a little more sense in that environment!
Still made them bloody expensive!

I had a FL D2 S8, was probably the best of the ones i've owned. I'm now on a D3 4.2 V8 and it's technically as quick if not better and has a lot of nice luxuries but the the D2 was just fun and boy did it feel like it could shift.

FE is a bit of a red herring as IT has said. Interesting colour combos and that's about it. Almost *EVERY* advert seems to have it on the later models these days because advertising!

BTW you can spot a later model FL by the gearbox shifter shape. Early ones have a sideways T, laters ones have a kind of dogleg type shape more common with the D3s and IIRC it has a "sport" mode which I always wanted to try.

Had a PF S8 and it was OK, but the tech was a bit basic and it had issues with the gearbox that killed it for me.
Oddly my FL did 220K on the standard gearbox without any servicing. The FL died at 120k

Don't forget inflation since 2000 too. In the UK it's about 65% according to this tool making my £57k D2 S8 the equivalent to £94k today!

Leather and rubber has been mentioned before for sure but it wasn't fine nappa and Michelins

Great pointers guys - thanks.

The S8 D2 came fairly well spec'd anyway so many of the options are nice to have, but for me a tidy cared for car would be more important than every option and an engine that hasn't be cared for.

I sense I am here for the long haul, let's hope something comes up.

Thanks again!

I'm not sure the engine is the biggest concern! I wonder how many perfectly good engines have gone to the scrappers because of a gearbox?!

In all honesty I would try to not be too specific and judge each case on it's merits. My car has some little niggles to fix (GPS aerial and CD Changer kaput, central locking a bit wonky sometimes, deffo some suspension work needed, history is patchy) but it had a £2k gearbox and torque converter refurb 5000 miles and 2 years ago and had an gorgeous, unique interior in great nick that I couldn't live without!

You will have expenditure on the car, just decide what is easy/important/costly for you to sort.

Plus when I was looking I was amazed how many of these cars come in quite 'grandad' colour schemes?? Each to their own though.
