Sat Nav. Upgrade?
I've never had a car with GPS Nav before. The Audi system is plainly a bit old but perfectly adequate for me. I made it a lot more useful by selecting the map to North orientation. All I need is to see my present position but how can I get the mostest out of what is fitted?
For example, what is the latest disc and are there any software updates available for the kit? Are there any settings which make a big difference to the performance of the thing? Thanks Simon

The car's a Nov 99 facelift S8. It's got the colour screen, moving map nav kit. S Edit to add: It's called 'Navigation plus'. Has an audio output + the directions come up on the instrument cluster where mpg etc is normally displayed. Actually it looks quite good the way it is. I'll need to read those instructions! It is possible to upgrade he RNS-C to RNS-D, but it also requires a TMC module installing so you get the turn by turn instructions on the dashboard. For casual use, the RNS-C is fine. Roads dont actually change that often, so a 2007 map disc is quite useful. I can't see the small increase in performance making the relitively costly upgrade to the RNS-D worthwhile...

How do you tell if it's RNS-C or D? I get the info on the dashboard, where the radio info appears normnally. It's a road diagram showing which way to turn. There is also an audio instruction. So is it a C or a D??? Where dio you get the 2007 disc? Got any one for sale? Thanks Simon

This is written on the side of the unit if you remove it, or it will show up with Vagcom if you connect to it. The RNS-D supports dynamic route navigation, via TMC broadcasts but Audi never supplied TMC enabled discs as standard so most people dont use it. The RNS-D also uses later 'Travel Pilot DX' map discs, where the RNS-C uses the earlier 'Travel Pilot' (non-dx) standard - Eject your CD and have a look. There are two other visual clues as to which system you have. The RNS-C will show you both the A1 and M1 roads with a '1' where the RNS-D will actually show and 'A1', 'M1 etc. Secondly, the RNS-C will show on the DIS turn by turn instructions, and the distance to the next turning on the right, however the RNS-D shows this plus it also shows on the left hand the total time remaining (or eta, depending on what you configure) and total distance to destination..... I'm holding an RNS-D owners manual here, which suggests it went into print August 1999, which tallies in my mind with when I suspect they started shipping out the newer units.. Bear in mind the flow of cars from the factory, so any car that is a 1999 is likely to have an RNS-C.... Hope that helps identify....
