What is this new fangled rnsd and e about then?
Well I'm looking to join the 21st century and have a more modern car. I have no idea what any of the kit in it does other than the bose makes it go thumpy thumpy better. (A very funny PM has made me realise that I should clarify that this last statement is ironic, i'm a home cinema nerd with an AX10ai running an adequate 7.1 setup and two active subs. Total amplification at 8ohms in RMS is measured in kilowatts. Keeps the room warm in winter lol)
What's the sat nav like in a 2001 s8? How much worse than my six month old big screen tomtom? postcodes? Sound quality compared to the standard hifi in a 97 a8? TV on the move, worth sorting out or a pain in the bum? what neat stuff did you put in that was actually good and not just a toy? A curious Bill Edit to add: I should probably dig out the manual for it shouldn't I? Probably available as a pdf somewhere?

Not as good as a Tom Tom but still good, and the directions coming up in the DIS is very useful. The RNS D has taken me to Paris and back and I think its great. No postcode but TV on the move is easy to do just cut a wire, someone can do it at a meet in 5 mins.

The later RNS-E is a much nicer unit (DVD based nav so you get Western Europe on 1 disc) with a wide screen format so looks about a decade more modern than RNS-D/Nav Plus - it's also more intuitive to use once you figure out the basic controls. My touch screen TomTom 940 is streets ahead in terms of interface, usability, reliability etc etc. But the screen ain't exactly huge!
Mine has RNS-E retrofitted, which is by no means a cheap exercise (4 figures, even doing it yourself!) and has had TV on the move activated (it's a software change rather than wire snipping like Amar mentions for the older unit). I've never used it on the move as 1. it's illegal, 2. nothing I want to watch is that desperate on the 4-5 channels I can currently pick up and 3. signal quality on the move is likely to be variable. Oh yeah, 1 disbenefit of RNS-E in a D2 is no DIS info for navigation - it just doesn't interface. Not an issue if you're going newer though. In terms of sound quality I don't expect it's any better than anything else factory fitted by Audi - I'm sure it could be improved significantly by removing the BOSE and fitting a 'proper' setup. |

You can do it for less then a grand. The one I fitted probably cost about £650 all in and I fitted it myself. The one Ian fitted in my car had genuine Bluetooth, TV tuner, reverse cam and was over a grand and if I paid him probably £400 fitting coding etc.

yeah, sorry - when I said over a grand I included the cost of bluetooth and tv modules.
Mine was 'professionally' supplied with all modules, and installed, and I believe was in the region of £3,000 - gulp! |
