I recall playing around with mine (and a spare) for ages, on and off, with various results, assuming it was a bad contact on those "bus bars" until I decided to look at the switch unit and quickly resolder it.

You're knocking off these little problems one by one.

1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)

And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

It's great when fixes are free. I know I've had few issues on my C4 and all it was was dry joints in relays and pumps.

Ordered spare alarm horn, seems to have the same plug but isn't D2 one hopefully it works.

Next one up is chasing down clicking noise behind centre console

It might not.
There are multiple versions with the same plug and two fundamental changes:
1. Different pins are used for different purposes. (You find that out after it doesn't work and you open it up)
2. The security protocol signals are different. (You find that out after opening it up and rejigging the wiring, still doesn't work!)
I think there are "some" versions from other Audi cars that will work, but most won't.

Is your original alarm horn the "rounded cube" style or the later more brick-shaped one with a circular sounder face?

Part number was 8L0951605A instead of 8L0951605. So assumed it's just the 'case's that changes.

Mine is rounded cube one.

Can't be 100% sure but I think that's the compatible one that I now have.
The internals have changed as much as the case, different batteries as well, but hopefully OK.

Would it be worth opening it up, replacing batteries before fitting? Just to future proof it?

That's what I replaced mine with, which I got from an '04 A4, which is supposed to be more reliable. The batteries are the weak point.

I think a few on here have done that, but the two halves of the unit are pretty well stuck together. Having hacked my broken one apart (for curiosity), you need to cut through about 5mm of plastic all the way around the joint.

I'd prefer to change the batteries but only if I can put it back together

I think I came to the same conclusion as Sean, leave well alone on the later version.
Mine does throw a low-voltage error in VCDS but works fine at present.

The older model also needs cutting open to replace the batteries but has a thinner shell; I opened mine and replaced the batteries but that only lasted for a while.
I did have a "wrong" newer model and tried to open it up out of curiosity, that was pretty difficult.

Another minor point to note is that the later model siren uses a different mounting bolt. I luckily had a suitable one in my "collection".
I actually mounted it in a slightly different and more accessible position using a convenient spare hole. This was only inches away, the wiring loom has very little slack in it.
