I'm doing a cutout with thick cardboard that I'll secure with masking tape, including a "step" for the 8. Then the the badge can rest against it for a final visual check it before I "commit".

And the old badge is very handy for making and checking the template. Time to commit!

Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)

And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

First fix and final result, hopefully a bit of polish will hide the "ghost" of the old badge..... especially with some rain on top!
(Though if I look carefully I can still detect the spurious 4.2 badge removed some years ago from the other side!)

More importantly, does this pass the Amar Eyeball alignment test?

Me too - not really what I mean by "making a car go sideways"

(sorry Andrew, I couldn't resist...)

Final (hopefully) comment from me. To get rid of some of the marks from crud around the old badge I used descaler solution, diluted not neat!
This then inspired me to attack the 4-rings badge, see: http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=15737

There was still a bit of a dull patch, somewhat evident in the photo, possibly from the badge adhesive attacking the lacquer over many years?
In the end I decided to use a mildly abrasive polish - Duraglit Silver - to smooth off the lacquer layer.
It worked really well and after more wax polish it's looking good, though at certain angles the outline of the old badge can just be seen.
