Hi
The pipe between the intake manifold and MAF is sealed and tight. I've checked it for leaks in the past as I thought this may have been the problem. I've also checked the EVAP hoses (unplugged N80 valve eletrical connector to keep it closed, and I had already replaced the hose between N80 and intake manifold prior to this to rule out any leaks). This doesn't seem to change anything. I've read some more values this morning after the car had done a short drive: 640 RPM: - MAF => 4.9 g/s - Injection timing => 2.46ms 2000 RPM: - MAF => 12.8 g/s - Injection timing => 2.46ms I'll try to get some logging done while driving. I've just done a quick log while driving. Not the best test data but it's quite hard to get through the rev range on public roads!

Hello Matthew , using my mass air flow calculator im getting
640 rpm 6.7 g/s 2000 rpm 20.05 g/s So we are loosing air.... or the reporting of air mass is off ( air mass meter ).... or air cannot get into engine (blocked exhaust route ) Does the car pull well if you put your foot down .....with blocked cats the more you boot it the more it will die a death from lack of flow For it to affect idle readings the cats or exhaust would have to be pretty blocked which would kill mid and top end . You say you have had a genuine air mass ......is this genuine audi part or a genuine bosch one from a motor factors or Euro car blaggers or somewhere ?? loads of Chinese copy supposedley gen. bosch air masses out there ........seen this a few times now ......under performing air masses affecting fueling ........seen over performing ones as well .......black smoke r us . Try this i want to see if the lamdas are reading rich ............. clear all adaptations first .......go into short term fuel trims for both banks hold rpm at say 2000 if trims start going to plus values ( ecm adding fuel ) slowly clamp off fuel return line from injector rail .........making it artificially rich ........do the trims start going the other way minus readings ( ecm taking away fuel ) I just want to see that the ecm can respond to a rich . If there is no fuel return rail ( return done internally in tank ) just squirt brake cleaner or easy start up the inlet ...... i just want to know lamdas and ecm can see it going rich . At this stage now i would be smoke testing inlet manifold and doing a vac test to see manifold integrity ...... i dont know if you have the gear to do this ?? The air mass reading being down is were i want to be going , all exit points off inlet manifold need to be ruled out ........... so ..... breather pipes to pcv , brake servo pipe things like that , have you had a spray around inlet maniflod with brake cleaner to see if it draws it in anywhere. If all this checks out as good .......next step injectors out for spray and quantity testing . Also did you try driving with air mass un plugged to see what happens with fuel trims . If you let me know where abouts you are in the country i could see if any of the pro diagnostic garages that are on the closed diag forums that im on could help you with carrying out a smoke test and manifold tests and so on . Say £50 for an hours diag maybe well spent especially with someone who knows what there doing ........better than guess at this that and the other . Im not preaching here by the way ........ near enough every week i see car coming in with egrs , injectors , map sensors , air masses , coil packs you name it 100s and 100s of pounds in parts ( guess a part squad ) and yes some garages are just as bad ...... test not guess ........test rule out ...move on . Air flow is not as simple a s fixed value at certain rpm. There will be massive difference at 2000rpm depending how much throttle is open. There are some readings in the log around 2000rpm with 45g/ms and the highest reading is 201.28g/s at 5120 rpm so the values seem plausible.
Lambda correction seams to be all over the place from -11.7% to +18% I have made a chart in excel, it does not look that correction depends on either rpm or airlow so really don't know whats going on.

Thanks to both of you for spending some time looking at the logs.
The MAF sensor was my first thought when I first bought the car 12 months ago. There was no MAF specific codes but I replaced it as a precaution as it looked original. The first one I fitted was a new genuine Audi part (although bought on eBay from someone who never fitted it - it was still boxed and looked genuine). This didn't make any difference. A few months ago I purchased a new Bosch MAF in case the previous one I purchased was dodgy (this time brand new from Amazon - not a third party seller. All seems genuine and I verified the serial number on the Bosch website). Still made no difference unfortunately so I think I can rule out the MAF sensor itself. I'd say the car seems to pull fine up to the limiter. I also have a 300BHP Mondeo and the A8 certainly feels a bit more powerful, despite the quattro and automatic gearbox power losses. If anything, I'd say it struggles at low RPM (<2000). If driving at a steady 30mph and go to accelerate, the engine labours a bit for a second before dropping a gear. This is my first automatic car so I'm not sure if this is to be expected - I assume in "D" mode it tries to keep the car in the highest gear possible. This isn't as bad when driving in "S" mode as the revs are held higher. I'm pretty sure there are no leaks from the intake manifold. When I had it off last week, I went over every vacuum hose and PCV breather and they all seem good. Throttle body gasket and intake manifold gaskets were replaced. Only area I've not checked is the brake booster - I believe the brake booster pressure can be checked with VCDS so I'll look into that. I've also checked for leaks with brake cleaner and propane around the manifold and injector o-rings but none found. The car has done 150k miles and when I recently replaced the fuel filter it was pretty clogged. I noticed on my logs there was some timing retardation (up to 12) at high RPM. Is this normal? This is not an area I'm too familiar with. I'll try the tests you mentioned tonight (unplug MAF and also simulate rich condition). I'm in the Bolton area so not too far away. ainarssems: Thanks for the chart. You're right in saying there is no obvious pattern to this behaviour and also no fault codes other than "too lean". The only symptom seems to be the MPG! Thanks

Just added a quick video showing the MPG drop from a cold start.
It shows the MPG start off at a steady 15mpg then immediately drops to 5mpg at around 20 seconds in. (Airbag warning light is a faulty passenger airbag disable switch, screenwash is about to be topped up!) Another thought - are intake temperatures worth logging?

My MPG counter does the same as yours in that video. Once driving mine starts to steady out and climb after a minute / few hundred meters. Have you recorded real fuel usage between fill up's?

Yes, it starts at 15.0 and climbs to 15.9 then back to 15.0 then climbs again. It has dropped to single figure MPG then climbs. It's like the DIS computer is calculating values until it has enough data. On a 25 mile journey I do I usually see around 30mpg for that trip.

Have you measured actual fuel consumption, i.e. how many miles per tank?
DIS is not always a good indicator, especially real time. Easy to go from 100MPG to single figures as you go from coasting to WOT in my S4 |
