It is a mechanical link and doesn't require any elastictrickery. Quite often it is seized so it won't turn at all which just requires dismantling and cleaning. I've not encountered one which just spins - that could be an issue with the tumblers being stuck and not engaging the mechanism, but its relatively straightforward to re-key a good used lock so thats also an option.

OK, so thats the next job then. Dismantle, clean and re-assemble. I THINK i can see what should be happening and the tumblers sticking could well be the issue. At the moment Ive left it full of WD40 and Ill see what happens tomorrow when I should also be getting a new battery under the warranty.

Well the front is a plastic/composite backing so I guess self-tappers will generally do, whereas the rear is aluminium panel.

I've actually got both screws (4 of with matching coloured caps) and pads on the front so that the plate fits the curve fairly snugly all the way across.

But shouldn't the key open the boot in the case of a flat battery? Ive been checking the action on the lock and ive assumed that the mechanical action is in someway faulty but cant yet work out what should happen as not having any battery to drive the unlocking pump i cant figure how it works with/without power. All linkages seem ok.
In my experience it will open the boot, unless the battery is really flat, in which case I have the same experience already mentioned - i.e. the key turning in the boot lock, but with nothing happening

Ooh, can any bright person find the link to Vera’s lock post? I probably won’t live long enough to wade through all the WITW posts!

In this case the battery was very dead. It was an old battery incapable of holding a charge for long that I was trickle charging just to keep the car alive whilst i sorted out the battery warranty issue on the other one. It was away being tested by Yuasa.

Easy Jim. Just search for threads started by MJ in the Daily Banter section and with the word pelican in it.

What's in the workshop this week, Pelikanblau edition

I suggest starting from the start as it makes great reading (again), but if you're impatient then click on the next link:

Boot Lock

And thanks Sean from me too. Looking at that Im now convinced that the issue is the same as Vera's.

PS, Can that section of the thread be extracted and posted as a "How to..." in the appropriate thread on repairs? It is a common problem.

So let it be written, so let it be done.

David, I've just created a new thread in the D2-Common Faults section with those instructions. The link to it is as follows:

Boot Lock Failure - Removal and Repair

I have also stated in that thread that it is MJs work. I don't want to take credit for it (as some people won't read the first part) and I'd prefer it if MJ had the final say on it's posting.
