they are 55w.. is that not illegal on road??? I thought 35w are max you can use on the streets. I don't want a copper to pull my trousers down for this.

HID kit came to my mind as a first thing buuuut it takes few second until they heat up and shine properly, also flashing with HID kit put loads of stress on the ballast and can break easily,,, I dont want to be replacing kit after flashing on 3-4 slag/blind drivers. Also big issues is to fit the ballast kit somewhere.. even my old A2 has more room under the bonet than 8' s...
\\\Just a LED as high beam?? do they produce enough light?? do you have any favorite H/Beam led's

Good point with HIDs I'd forgotten about that! Something like these on Amazon, not sure what type you need for the D3 though but gives the idea. Not sure how bright they are...

Correct. The 55w are not road legal, the 35w are.

You can get 'R' HIDs (eg H7R bulbs) which are supposed to be for reflector headlamps to reduce glare. How well they work or their legality, I don't know

Which HID kit did you install OP, and do you have any interference with DAB?

I have a good experience with this bulky ballast used it on all my previous cars....Everything seems to be working fine without flickering...I am not sure what do you mean by DAB.

I did mine two years back, but had to swap the ballasts 'cos they gave me a Xmas Tree Dis whenever I switched them on. With the replacement ballasts it happened occasionally but by moving the nearside one I finally cleared the problem. I think it was interfering with the ABS block????
As far as DAB is concerned no interference but I'm well upset at the coverage, I lose signal whilst travelling.

Cheers Ray, I concur re: DAB coverage. Shocking the last couple of days around Warrington and Mancs. Better than France and Spain I guess, where there's none and (largely) shockingly poor FM.

The annoying thing about DAB reception is that after spending my pocket money on a DAB unit, retrofitting it and fitting a replacement preamplifier on the back window reception is pants.
Yet the company A8 that I used to drive all over UK had a DAB that worked virtually everywhere.
