Have you had a play with the brightness adjustment (near the headlight switch)? Faulty switch maybe!? or an ambient light sensor?

oldnick, assuming you're talking about your D2 (as this is posted in the D4 section), there seems to be issues with the D2 clusters with respect to the displays fading. See the following thread:

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=10924

although in this instance the display is dim and is more visible as it becomes warm. I have a similar problem to yours, but only with the time/date display, in that the left side of it gradually fades. I thought someone else had posted about the display fading, but can't find it.

Found the other thread:

just noticed something

open the door to get in , display lights up brightly time/date /mileage /trip
and stays bright as long as the door is open !
so how can it be a problem with the display ?

In one of those other threads, it mentions about the ambient temperature in the car, so in theory, as long as the door remains open and the engine isn't running, then there will be no build up of ambient temperature, and the display won't be affected. I don't like much heat in the car (temp set at 18-19 and window opened if necessary), but there's still enough of a buildup to affect mine.
