Default On the way out?

I have a bad feeling about my gearbox...... 98k from new, don't think it's ever been serviced, 5-4-3 shifts started to get jerky and started randomly changing on a light throttle from 5 to 4 and back again.

Having read up these pages, I figured that I needed a oil change plus filter before it got worst. That has improved it but not to the level that makes me confident.

My local Audi specialist recommended a specialist transmission company called 3 d transmission in reading- anyone any experience of them?

They are going to do an investigation for £75 after which they will give me their verdict- wish me luck!

The concensus has become I think that servicing the box when its already done high miles is not really beneficial.

In the same way changing engine oil after 98000 miles for the first time cant magically undo any damage done by the crud whirling round the engine, changing the gearbox fluid cant wind back the clock either.

A seperate theory stands that disturbing the sludge by changing the oil for the first time late in life can actually make things worse, not better as the gunk that was happily sat out of the way is now free and floating about the box....

No evidence either way, but generally speaking, if you service a ZF box from new every 20K there are claims it should go forever. Conversely, anything with oil in that is never serviced has a very finite life.

Prefacelift A8's would rarely get above 120K on the first gearbox, and the S8 would see less than that, so your fears could be well founded....

Sorry, none of this helps, but thought I'd reply anyhow...

Some do, I met a guy with a 170k mile final edition he has had for years on its original gearbox. I had a 5 speed A8 with a 220k gearbox still going strong when I sold it.

Mine was still going strong with both hunting and thumping at 150k with no signs of getting worse, in fact it got better after the first oil change.

Though.. I'd start putting a bit of money away for a refurb as it will die eventually.

Mine's still working perfectly in my S8 at 41k miles even though it's 8 years old and not been serviced. I'm getting the gearbox oil changed at the next 2 annual services, which should get most of the old stuff out.

Box needs to be dropped to change the faulty range switch anyway, so exhuast will be out of the way.

Well I'll be getting my new service exchange box oil changed every 20,000 miles from new, so should be able to report. . . . unfortunately I've worked out that at 4-5000 miles a year thats one change every 4 years and 20 - 30 years before I can report back on whether it has made a difference!!

I didn't get my car new, but it had a whole sheaf of receipts from way back. I believe the gearbox to be original and never serviced. It has 310,000km and apart from all lights lighting up after parking on a very steep incline has shown no signs of trouble. Less power/torque applied from the diesel perhaps?
