That's not the throttle valve, that's the EGR Cooler changeover valve.
The throttle valve is one the larger silver part somewhere above the dipstick.

Yeah your correct, I got it fixed. The gears had worn that control the throttle valve so I got a throttle valve repair kit (basically two plastic gears) £30 and fitted them, problem sorted.

Well done - where did you get the cogs from? I have never seen that.
I don't know what is wrong with your cooler flap, Mine used to do that and when I investigated the whole thing had fallen apart inside and had to be replaced, not sure if that's why it flapped back and forth like that and not sure if it still does that.

I had the same cog wear out on my old D3, I couldn't find parts and was tempted to buy a throttle body off a golf to see if the cog was the same (much cheaper than an A8 one, but a different shape!) but in the end bought a pair of throttle bodies of a German breaker that only have 30k kms on them and just swapped the full units.....

Still have the "spare" good one in the garage (and likely the broken one also)

Bought them from manifold kits uk via ebay, the exact part code was different to what they had listed but took a chance and they fitted fine. Little bit of work getting the half gear off had to gently grind top surface down with flap disc but it was an easy enough job.
