Auto dimming mirror failure
After putting up with a "golden" coloured mirror for some time now on the pssenger side, the fluid inside started to "drain" yesterday giving it a wierd fish tank look.
 Looks like renewal is now a must.

I feel your pain David, my driver's side mirror did exactly the same. I settled for a "non auto-dimming" replacement after being told the cost of a new one. I got one for £15 from A8 Parts which was preferable to shelling out £100+ for an Audi part from a dealer.
I asked David if used one's were ever available and he said they're often no good by the time they get them in. Good luck with your quest

As another thought, does anyone know if the failed unit can be drained of the fluid (what is it? how does it work?), cleaned and re-installed as "non auto-dimming". At least it would retain the same black surround.

A8 parts have a couple of auto dimming n/s door mirrors in stock now so it's worth calling David and begging for his best price!!

Yeah David, I bought a heated one and it was as good as new. I actually bought a replacement from eBay first (I hadn't discovered A8 Parts at this time) and paid £10 for it and it was useless. It had connections and was supposed to be heated but it didn't work. Luckily I discovered A8 Parts not long after and bought a real one that works.
Thanks Neil, that's good to know, I'll be making a call tomorrow. The different mirror lens didn't bother me when I had the original body coloured mirrors on but since I switched to S8 aluminium ones the auto dimming one seems to stand out more so I notice they're very different every time I'm in the car now. Hopefully I can get one for a reasonable price.
