Just to say a public 'thanks' to David for taking some time to investigate my car with his VCDS.
He cleared the fault codes, but the oil level caution came on again as soon as the car put into drive.
Btw, I've checked, and there IS oil in the thing!

Good to hear its just the sensor.
It measures oil opacity, interesting, so is that where it gets the 'oil quality' figure from? I always wondered how the ECU measures oil quality.

check wiring and cables connection to the sensor, then change sensor & oil

The car was off the road in storage, but when I got it back, changed the oil and filter and sensor.
Warning stayed on for a few weeks then went away.

I think it was overly black oil, that caused the problem.
