Yeah i took vagcom with me as well, phoned ahead to view the car about 250miles each way didn't bother to clean it for me, and it was stuck in the corner when i arrived covered in mud, didn't trust the guys who were selling it..

All that aside in the past, good luck with sale was a nice example of one!

Funnily enough, your near neighbour (me) also has a similar cooling issue. I can run it on idle all day and it stays at 90. And out on the open road it sits at 90. But then, if I slow down in traffic or climb a steep hill, the temperature rises. Or if I then sit back at idle it also rises. And it started to happen after a belt change (with a new thermostat). It was very unnerving initially, but eventually I let the temp rise - it goes up to around 100 and eventually it falls again. It’s been like that for a couple of years an, inititially I was doing a 75 mile daily commute.
Not sure if anything would show up on VagCom, but if you fancy a careful drive to Redmile, I’ll plug it in for you (I’m up to my ears in decorating, so can’t come to you just now).

I have to confess to rarely, if ever, looking at the temperature gauge. But given that at 100C the needle is vertical I would probably assume that was pretty normal.

A quick rummage online finds:
Quote:
For most cars, the normal operating engine temperature is in a range of 195 to 220 degrees Fahrenheit
That's 90C to 104C by the way.

I think the VCDS measuring method for thermostat and CTS is shown here: http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index...3/P2181/008577

Thanks for the offer. I do have vagcom so can take a look if it throws anything up. One thing is for sure I know something has changed. I’m paranoid like that and have always kept an eye on temps. It used to sit bang on 90 all the time, everytime.

If these cars have an auxiliary water pump for the cabin could that explain why the cabin stays warm even if the main water pump has failed?

I'd take a look anyway, see what those temperature sensors are all saying.

These engines do like to run hot - 100 actual temperature measured by the ECU is fairly normal. The cluster actually obfuscates the real temperature and shows 90 from about 80 to 100 actual temperature. Not sure why Audi felt the need to do that on the 8 when the 4 and 6 of the same generation show actual temperature

Definitely worth having a look at what the ECU is reporting with VCDS. Its not inconceivable that the cluster could have started showing the actual temperature rather than normalising it to 90 all the time.

Bizarrely (and completely irrelevant but mildly interesting), the climate control guesses at the engine temperature based on running time and load as measured by the cluster, despite it talking directly to both the cluster and ECU about other things, both of which are measuring the actual temperature

My S8 does this as well, but only in warm weather when stationary in traffic.
The thing that cools the temp down when it hits 100 or 110C is your AUX exectric fan coming on, check it out next time it happens.
I suspect the temp creeps up because the main viscous clutch fan has failed.
I bet if we all replaced this it would be back to normal.
Actually I am planning to replace mine with a main electric fan that comes on a bit lower than the AUX fan, which seems to wait until its over 100C

The aux fan should always be on unless the AC is in eco mode. Its lowest speed is also controlled by the radiator switch, if the AC controller hasn't already turned it on. Medium speed is controlled by the second contact in the radiator switch (which in my case switches on the main electric fan), and the top speed is controlled by the cluster in 'oh ****' mode

Could be that the aux fan has failed - that's very common on the 4s & 6s. If its not running with the AC on then check to see if its seized. It can also take out the fuse under the passenger carpet if its failing but not actually dead yet.

Add in a worn viscous clutch, and it could get quite toasty!

Thanks for all your replies. I will check the viscous fan. However wouldn’t it overheat at idle even more than when in motion if a fan had failed? My mechanic that did the thermostat left the car running for 15 minutes and it was running when I arrived. We had a chat, I paid up, got in the car and still at 90. Only once driving on a bypass (so not in traffic) did it begin the creep up. That’s the opposite to what my brain tells me when I think of how engine cooling works.

Out of interest, why was the thermostat replaced? Or was it just part of a major service along with belts etc.?
