Told the garage to disconnect it after hearing back from them

The Auxiliary coolant pump / valve unit is providing very difficult to get. A new one is £915.77 plus VAT, but currently listed as no stock at Audi Germany which means they may have been discontinued! - Part number is 4D0959617C

You might get one from our sponsors, but that equally could either be noisy or become noisy pretty soon. Though there is a new one on US eBay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/301865323495 .

The best solution is "probably" to just replace the motor, if you "really" want it to work, assuming you can identify an equivalent. I recall reading somewhere about accessing it via the bulk head from the glovebox area, which sound a bit implausible.

Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

How important is the C suffix?:

Up for sale is the Auxiliary Heater Control Valve out of a wrecked Audi A8 with 69,946 miles.
This Heater Control Valve will fit a various models and years of Audi. The item has been tested and as you can see it is in excellent condition.

Part Number: 4D0 959 617 A
I would imagine it should be possible to refurbish one of those units to replace the bearings or whatever is making the noise.

I refurbished mine with new bearings, but the factory ones are odd sizes so standard replacements don't work. I had to turn the shaft down a tad with the lathe so they'd fit.

The weird thing about mine was that it ran the motor whenever the ignition was on, rather than just when the Rest button was pressed. It got really annoying so I just unplugged it in the end.

Yup, it runs all the time to help coolant flow around the heater matrix.

That eBay link posted by Moltuae; you could probably rob the motor off it, that's what makes the noise.

Surely you could fix that with some relays and diodes?

Yeah it was the running all the time, with what appears to be nothing on which was the biggest pain

HPsauce just seen that on ebay sent our sponsors an email tonight but don't hold out much hope

James, everyone else just disconnects it and lives without it.

It was a semi-serious suggestion. Probably fairly easy to hack into the wiring so that when "rest" is used the pump is energised, but otherwise isn't.

heard from a8 parts today

We are currently sold out of Aux water pump with part number 4D0959617C we do however have the earlier part with part number 4D0959617A it will fit to your car but the connector will have to be clipped off and swapped with yours, the plug is only a two wire so it is pretty straight forward.

The aux water pump is £189.99 GBP we have it listed here http://store.prestigemotorservices.c.../view/id/31221

Maybe of use to someone
