Default Diff whine

My 85,000 mile 2003 A8 has a whine from the rear of the car at motorway speeds, below 55 - 60 it's totally absent. I think it's from the diff but can't be 100% sure. Any thoughts or suggestions?.

Wheel bearings? Does the noise change if you turn right or left?

I had this on a 2004, turned out to be drivers side rear wheel bearing.
Unless you’ve had a leak from the diff, I’d start looking at the wheel bearings first.
After replacing the offending bearing, I ran my D3 for another 100K miles and the other 3 bearings never gave any bother which seems crazy.

No leak from the diff noticed but will double-check. I'll go for a drive and try to figure whether it's coming from one side or the other - maybe get someone to sit in the back.
