Must be a difficult decision, We also had a Volvo s60 with over 200.000 miles on I think its been the best car we've ever owned.
We moved from Cambridgeshire to the highlands and the Volvo could do that on half a tank. Been back to Inverness this year in our a8 tdi and used 3/4 of a tank.
If it wasn't for towing our caravan I'd have bought another Volvo.

Good luck and have fun looking for your next car.

Here we are at the start of April 2018 and I still have the Audi, now this is the longest I have ever owned a car in my entire driving career.

4 years and almost 6 months later, and not many miles travelled, she had 128K miles when I got her back in 2013 and now has 162K miles.

She is due a cambelt change this year, on age not mileage and this may well be the thing that means she gets sold. I cannot really justify spending almost 1K on the work, when I am on the verge of being made redundant from work (5 weeks and counting) with no new job on the horizon.

I have recently shopped around for parts for the cambelt replacement on my 4.2L - I think the total cost was between £200 and £250 for everything including water pump, thermostat, tensioners, and specialist tools. All of these parts would have been £600+ from a dealership. I can send the links over if this helps you at all!

I'd be tempted to take off the cambelt cover and have a look at the cambelt. If it has no age related cracking and looks ok, You could leave it for a while and take your chances.
Worst case, there is a complete 2nd hand engine on EBay for £450.

I had to replace a faulty thermostat about a year ago and I diy'ed the timing service water pump etc while I had the front off. The specialist tools aren't too bad, if I recall the cam lock bar, crank pin and two pin pulley wrench. Add in a few sundries like a rubber washer to the rad pipe and the plastic clips for the wheel liners and you're good to go. Good time to change the light bulbs as well.

Ok all.

Still have the D3, she is now due a service and MOT needs to be done next month. Cambelt change is now overdue on age and not mileage.

Next fix to be completed is the ABS ECU which has developed a fault, that is being done tomorrow at a place local'ish to me. Spoke to them on the phone yesterday, and they said no problem as they have fixed a few of these ECUs already. I am driving the car to them and they will remove, fix and reinstall whilst I wait which will take a couple of hours.

I need to get the ABS issue sorted to get it through the MOT, this in addition to a small hole in the centre section exhaust which also needs to be fixed but I've found someone who is happy to weld a patch over the hole.

I am still unemployed, so the future retention of the A8 once it has an MOT is in the balance, at the moment I don't use it and it's done just 4K miles in the last year. The drive tomorrow to North Devon will be the furthest it's been for quiet sometime.

Oh and for the first time in a very long time it took more than £100 to fill it up, partly because the last time it had a full tank was months ago.

Mid July 2018 and I still have the D3.

The ABS ECU was repaired by MD Automotive in Uffculme, I took the car to them and they removed and repaired and refitted the ECU whilst I waited.

She went through the annual MOT yesterday which she passed with a couple of issues highlighted but these will need attention in the next year.

Now on 165K miles and still in need of a service and cambelt change, but I am still out of work and running out of money.

Stay strong my friend, and keep up the job hunt. It's just a matter of time and I understand how worried you must be.

What sort of work are you looking for?
