But on the 2G it DOES require special hardware, right?

On the steering wheel there should be a button next to volume scroll button, press it and see if it asks you for a command or dis will say button not present or something like that

Yeah, it says "Not Present" (or something).
Is it retrofit? Is it hard to accomplish? It would be really cool...
Anyone know the P/N?

Speech module is needed and installed in the analogue radio. Also one, maybe two?, microphone have to be installed in the roof. Not sure as to the wiring for the microphones so a quick check in the current flow would be needed. It's do able though

I added SDS to my car, it wasnt lucky enough to leave factory with it fitted as an option.

Long story short, I had the Motorola phone in the console / Arm rest so I didnt need to add any microphones to the system.

I use mine mostly for the Navigation functions of the car.
It is SOOOOOOOOOOOO much easier to talk to the machine that to use the (while simple and easy to use itself) rotory knob on the MMI.

It is def quicker (and probably safer) to use the SDS in this instance - its much easier to enter nav destinations on the move.

I also use it for the Telephone functions too (BT Retrofit too).

I rarely use it for anything else, unless someone new is in the car and wants to here the Machine be talked to, to do the work.

It is something that you can live without, its not the smoothest and quickest of systems - but have to remember, this Pre-dates Siri!

i did the retrofit, but had the bt phone o the micrphone was already installed

its an easy plugin, a quick recode, if you have bt you have to tell the bt to use the new module instead of its own. but CP kicked in so had to go to audi
didnt charge me for it though some will

I was telling my little grand daughters that you can talk to the car and it will do what you ask it to. The big one asked if she could say something to it. "Sure, wait for the beep then speak." She pipes up with "Can you be happy please"

This pretty much sums up my gripe with the somewhat surly, miserable navigation voice. After a while it really begins to grate
