Default CD Changer and Aerial

New member here, lots of great info on here!

Purchased recently an A8 4.2L, 97 Model with CD changer in the boot. Everything was working fine for a while, and all of a sudden it just started saying "No CD". Any common causes for this? anything to look at specifically before others?

Also while a not huge, its a pain in the ass, but the aerial has never extended and retracted the whole time I've had it. .... cant hear any motor going to make it go up/down when turned on. ... Can manually put it down by pushing it, but it then gets a loud beeping through the audio system (RDS system?)

Easy to change the motor over?

presumably you have checked that there is power to the aerial when you turn the radio on , if so it is easier and cheaper to just change the whole thing ...you may have to do a bit of splicing

personally I hardly use the radio , prefer the CD player , so am going to just fit a stubby

Welcome!
The no CD message is a common fault and just means the CD changer is on it's way out. Try disconnecting it in the boot and just plugging it back in again to 'reset' it.

I contemplated this, but was concerned about getting the constant RDS (I think it is) beeping coming through the audio system when it seems to have minimal radio signal (UK Imported car now in Australia) .. as even when the CD changer used to work, in regional area's while using CD the beeping keeps happening and sh*ting me to tears. .... Never encountered this issue on a car before, so I could be very wrong about the RDS thing?

Disconnected the changer in the boot, left it for a while and replugged it. ... still says no CD.

Are they easy to find a replacement? or do they share this unit with other Audi's? ... D2 A8's are thin on the ground in Australia

It's a pretty standard unit, though you need to check the cabling/connectors.

mine stopped working so was going to look around for another one , possibly lack of use while the car was stored in the barn

I then had cause to disconnect the battery several times while I was looking for a parasitic drain ...and it reset itself several times since which it has worked perfectly ...curious

I took the precaution of making sure I had the radio code before disconnecting the battery , but the radio worked immediately without demanding it !

as Alice said , curiouser and curiouser !

Oldnick, that seems strange, but hey if it works? ... not a plan that I'm going to attempt first though

Mate was out there having a play around with it before, ... it selects the CD's fine, but doesnt seem so spin them up. Possible that something in the boot has rolled around and given it a whack and knocked something out of alignment, or got something stuck (my housemate was using the car while it suddenly stopped working one day) so not sure if there was anything precedenting it ceasing to work.

well it is easily removed from the car and just as easy to take the case off a bit to get inside , just be careful not to lose the button which ejects the cassette , it just sort of sits in place !
anyway once you get the cover off have a look for a loose connection and give it a good shake in case something has dropped in the works !
the age of miracles is not yet past !
