Default How to change left (nearside) drive shaft oil seal ?

Changed right seal today and it is a straightforward job since you remove bolt in the middle of the gearbox flange, then remove the flange and basically change the seal.

Now the left (nearside) gearbox flange has got no bolt in the centre (!), so it looks like the whole inner shaft including speedometer assembly should come out.

Did anyone change the nearside seal ??? Please advice.

It looks like the procedure is similar to this: http://passatb5.wikidot.com/automati...t-drivers-side

Yeah that side you have to remove the whole flange. Its about a foot long as it goes right through the bellhousing in to the diff on the other side. There's a circlip on the inside to release the shaft from the bearing. There's also an oil seal on the inside where the shaft goes in to the diff housing so you need to be careful not to damage that when withdrawing the shaft otherwise it'll leak in to the bellhousing.

Cheers Adrian. I'll let you know how things develop.
I think link on the 1st post has a rather accurate description.
The part numbers from the link (which is for Passat B5) match what I have in my car exactly, so the procedure should be the same.
