It did seem to be a good, balanced review. GLWTS. Now, where is that AMG for sale?

Thinking about it the other way round, the S8 is the odd one out. (and the Quattorporte partially, as its a much lighter car more akin to a M3) Perhaps they put the S8 in the mix because it is more sporty than any S-class or 7-series offerings of the time, and a more premium product than the S6? Even though its bigger, weight-wise it is very similar to the M5. |

I suspect that the journo's choose the cars that they think will engage the most people. They are after all in the job of selling print.
Their priority is not the best matched machinery, but the widest appeal. They will also have more than one eye on who is paying for and likely to pay for, advertising. Those cars all have healthy enthusiast followings. And here are we (enthusiasts) discussing the article, and some of us will likely become purchasers of, or subscribers to said publication. Nice to know that the S8's appeal is shared by more than just us

Just bought a copy.
Ok so I got it completely wrong. Its the 2006 Maserati, so completely different to the 4th gen Quattroporte. I haven't read it yet, but I have to say the line-up is completely wrong and unfair. 2006 Maserati? 2004 E55? vs a group of cars which ended production in 2001 or 2002? I don't think so! The correct line up would have been the W210 E55 and if they had to have a Maserati, the 4th Gen Quattroporte (which is in a completely different size and weight class). In 2006 the D3 S8 was available for f'sake. But I'll read it anyway, lets see what it says. |

Ranting on.. sorry
The cheapest Quattroporte gen V is £13k, totally out of the price range of the others. Cheapest M5 E39 around £5.5k Cheapest E55 W211 around £6.5k (even though they should have used W210) so even price wise the line up makes no sense. |

I have to say, really enjoyed reading Modern Classics. I actually enjoyed the other articles more than the V8 shootout. Such as the Citroen vs Saab article, the Japanese car article, Clio V6, etc.
Lots of very interesting cars. Love that crazy Citroen steering wheel! Now I want to get the 1st issue too |
