Default 19s or 20s

Alright folks

I have a set of 20 Final Editions at the minute, and as nice as they are i am still hankering for a set of forged lightweight alloys.

Considering 19x8.5 with 255x40, or 20x8.5 255x40

Both the 19s and 20s I am looking at are around 9-10KG so pretty light. My question is, is 8.5 width enough for the amount of torque a 4.2 D3 has?

Note i will be getting it mapped shortly.

Would i be better finding a 19x9, would the extra width of the 9 give better grip. Which do you think would have better handling 19x8.5 or 20x8.5. For the wheels i am looking at the 20 might actually be marginally lighter..

Price wise the 20 will be the dearest option.

Tyres will make all the difference. 20s with crap tyres will be worse than 19s with good tyres, and vice versa.

Would you consider 20 9J with 275/35 tyres?

Thats what I've done on my both D3s and it works well.
What I wouldn't do is try to fit 255/35 on 8.5J as it stretches the tyre, wheel looks smaller and wheel arch gap opens up, but visually only if you have a pretty high offset.

I found my ET29 20s to be spot on leaving only 6mm gap between the back of the spokes and face of the front calipers.

Thanks for the input, exactly what i was looking to hear. The wheels i was looking at only come in 19x8.5 20x8.5 and 20x9.5.

Yes i definitely dont want to open up the wheel arch. Currently my 20s are 20x9 and et46.

That's interesting you could go right down to et29 - sounds good. Any idea what i could go to with an 8.5?

I was also going to suggest 275/35/20s on 9Js, its what the S8 runs and the step up from the 265s has made a marked improvement on ride quality.

Best play with some numbers on: http://www.willtheyfit.com

Tbh because of all the rubber and air used in the s8/a8 my ride on 22" with thin rubber isn't uncomfortable. J size doesn't matter much, tires have a huge range in which they can be stretched or compressed, just pick the tire width you want. Also I notice no difference in accel between original double spoke 20 vs the same in 22

Well guys

Still hankering at new wheels. Very close to pulling then pin on these

http://dawmac.eu/WebRoot/Namesco/Sho...36761_6_ml.jpg

Not these exact ones but same make model.

So option are 8.5 9.5 or 10 in 20s.

I am thinking of going 9.5 front and 10 rear. The 10 rear gives a greater concave at the rear.

So to keep the speedo in tact I am also thinking 275 35 20 all round. I’m sure this will be fine on the 9.5 but maybe a bit stretched on the 10?

Also from reading other threads I believe the 9.5 wil go on front and 10 on rear? It’s a 4.2tdi 06 d3.

@steamship did you get wheels sorted? If i buy then the fe 20s will def be for sale...

My understanding is that 10J all round on an ET35 running 275/35/20 is about perfect, it’s what I’m looking at in the summer...
