Default The dreaded MOT time is here

My A8 3.7 QS will be going through its MOT test in the next few weeks, and it must be completed by the 1st May when the current one expires.

The car has intergalactic mileage, but what kind of things can I check before putting the car in. She drives fine, all the bulbs, horn etc. work. Brakes and disks were changed at 172K (now on 174K), had some suspension arms changed on one side in January.

Looking back at the online MOT history, the last MOT had a single advisory and that was "Offside Front Track rod end ball joint has slight play", the car has covered 6,000 miles since the last MOT so I wonder if this could lead to a fail this time.

Don't worry about it too much!

Seat Belts
Bulbs
All doors open in and out
Tyre treads
Cuts or cracking in the tyre walls
Exhaust system leaks
Handbrake feels tight

All things you can check without much hassle. If you're confident enough whipping off the wheels you can do plenty of easy checks to get ready for the big day!

Catalyst efficiency, and lazy lambda sensors. If you know a decent shop, you could get your emissions checked pre-MOT.

Run some fuel treatment through at least half a tank of fuel, and drive her hard! Regular short trips can cause emission issues, and a few sharp blasts will blow the cobwebs away.

I'll definitely put some cleaner through now you mention it, I have had the "cat bank1 below efficiency - intermittent" fault in VCDS twice now in 3 months.

Maybe I am worrying about nothing, the first time you put a car through an MOT in your ownership is always a worrying time I think.

The track rod ends are not expencive anyway even if they do need replacing GSF or simiar. As already stated just check the basics yourself and put it in see what it fails on, if anything. And 174k phaa she's just run in

I have checked the OS track rod for play, and with the car jacked up it shows all the signs of having quiet a lot of movement and not the little as at the last MOT.

I'll probably get the track rod end changed before the MOT is carried out, there is a local place to me that could do this and the MOT as well. Problem with this approach is the car will cool down, and I want the engine to be at normal temps when the emissions test is carried out.

MOT emissions test should be done when engine is up to operating temperature so it is their responsibility to ensure it is up to temp. If the garage has temp probe they should insert it in place of oil dipstick to ensure oil temp is up to requirements, if not then check temp gauge in car, if not working then check that electric cooling fan kicks in irrc.

When replacing track rod end make sure that wheel alignment is adjusted as required including constant "S" which is often missed and result in excessive tyre wear mostly on inside.

Well its now booked in for Thursday, first appointment of the day. I'll know in a couple of days how bad / good things are. The booking is early to allow any parts required to be brought in given that the 8 is becoming increasingly rare.

I had to clear the cat efficiency errors again at the weekend, although this time I had no CEL on and was just scanning the car for faults in VCDS.

Wahay,

Great news.

Car has passed the MOT test, will update thread later with emissions data and advisories. Just relieved really, and another year ahead.

Car now back in my hands.

No advisories, and here are the emissions figures.

Fast Idle Test:
CO - Limit 0.20% , Reading 0.04%
HC - Limit 200ppm, Reading 13ppm
Lambda - Limit 0.97 to 1.03, Reading 1.003

Natural Idle Test:
CO - Limit 0.30% , Reading 0.01%

So no issues, and all looking good for the drive to Estapona (Costa Del Sol) in a few weeks.
