Default Cambelt change?

Can anyone please advise me- does the D3 4.2Q petrol engine have a cambelt (as opposed to a chain) that needs changing at specified intervals and if so, how much does the job cost?

thanks for your guidance

Yes, the D3 4.2 has a timing belt - although it shares more in common with the late B6 S4 engine than the D2 V8 it did have a belt whereas the S4 was the first to use a timing chain.

You should be changing every 80k or 5years.

Full timing belt, tensioner kit and coolant pump with auxiliary belt is between £400-£500 Inc Vat etc. Dealers would be about £750 I think

Learn something new every day. My 3.0 TDI D3 has timing chain, and the diesel pump is belt driven etc, I'm surprised all the D3's are not chains.

Ben-would you ever advise chaiging the chain? What would be your rough price for this?

Tricky one this as cost of replacing chains is BIG. There's 4 or 5 chains on most of the late engines and they're loctaed at the back of the engine so it must come out. This make it expensive to do if there's no need. However, Ive seen a few 3.0TDi's break tensioners (especially driver's side bank at top) and they're starting to have issues with chains stretching, putting valve and fuel timing out! Thats petrols too though!

I will work out a quote for ya anyway just so you know!
