Potential purchase - iffy diesel injector
Hi all.
I'm off to view a 2005 4.2tdi soon. The owner has indicated that 1 injector may be on its way out! He said there's white/grey smoke when the car has been sat in traffic for a while. During normal driving, there's no issue. The car recently went through an Mot with no problems, but, the injector fault has been diagnosed by a garage. After doing a little research, it seems there were issues with 2005 and 2006 Audi diesels? My train of thought is that, if 1 is on its way out, there's potentially 7 more to follow. I believe 1 injector costs around £200 - £300? Has anyone had any experience or can offer advice re this potentially expensive subject? I have not owned a diesel before but the 4.2 sounds like its a good power plant. I previously had a 4.2 petrol d3 which was great. Thanks

I had one replaced recently, it was a fraction of that cost. I was thinking about having them all replaced, but the garage advised it's not necessary.

Sorry it was the glow plug I was thinking, not the injector

A common problem <2007, especially 2004-5
I too agree it's best to get them all done as the problem generally affects the whole set - seller would probably get that done if just one was duff, but all 8 would be way over £1000 even at cheap DIY prices ebay germany often has good deals. http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_fr...c&LH_PrefLoc=2 Last edited by snapdragon; 19th October 2014 at 04:32 PM. |

Now that I'm sobered up a bit, I seem to remember reading that the fuel injector issue was more common with 3.0TDI than 4.2TDI?

I often wondered that. By looking at them, the injectors are the same part with different calibration so I would expect them to suffer the same problem, but may not hear about it as the 4.2 is much rarer, but the 3.0 is probably the most popular model.

From our phone conversation Chris it does not sound like its much of an issue, perhaps something to sort in the future.
