Default 4.2TDI, Flahing glow plug light ,cut out on motorway

Hello Again

Some of you may have seen my 4.2TDI not starting thread ,anyway since then it has been running and starting fine.
I have been down to Surrey this week for work so travelled down on monday from liverpool and no issues at all , the drive was great. The tank was full when i set off and was down to just under 3 quarters when i got to surrey.
Friday afternoon set off back up north and had a lovely drive until i got to the M62 turn off from the M6 , the glow plug light started flashing and the cruise turned off, it then ran for about a mile and then died on the M62 slip road.
The tank was just under half way which is about where it was when it stopped starting a few weeks ago.

Had my laptop in the boot so scanned it

Would i be right in saying it looks like fuel starvation?

Cleared the codes and try starting but now its just turning over.

Got recovered and its back on the path.

Is the fuel tank in two pieces ? im wondering if a pump is not transfering fuel from one side to the other????
So when the fuel in one side is used thats it!

Any ideas???

Thanks in Advance

I have a feeling you have hit the nail on the head, there has been plenty of talk on petrol cars with fuel pickup issues the pumps are not put back in the tank correctly. Fill her up and see what happens

Has the fuel filter ever been changed? Might be worth checking it as diesels are more prone to problems with blocking at this time of year and it's a cheaper possibility than a pump issue!

Maybe in-tank pumps or pipes?.
I haven't looked inside the A8 but other older Audis had a saddle-shaped tank due to the rear diff in the middle and 4 plastic corrugated pipes to the corners to an octopus-like pump in the middle which sat in a chamber/sump that was kept full. If you look at #27 on the parts list looks similar but internal pipes are not shown.

Quick update .

Put 6 5 litre containers of fuel in to bring it upto just over 3 quartes full , spayed a bit of easy start in each air intake and she fired up.

Been out for a run and shes back to normal.

So looks like when one side of the tank empties she wont run. While I investigate further I just need to keep her above half a tank.

I have just got my etka up and running so I have some reading to do to understand whats going on.

Has anyone replaced the in tank pumps before . Is it diy or a nightmare??

Thanks again to everyone who has posted!

I didn't think the D3s had this problem, or at least didn't have the complex multi-chamber venturi driven tank system.

It's one of the only issues I still haven't resolved on my D2, after about 4 years of ownership, and it's not through lack of trying. I've had a go myself and had a dozen mechanics attempt the repair, including 1 or 2 pretty skilled ones, but I haven't been able to fix it yet. I've just learned to live with it and always keep it above half a tank. I'm considered locating a suitable replacement tank, complete with pumps.

The problem with my car began when I bought it: Typical backstreet car sales place, made sure there was just enough fuel in their vehicles to keep the bottom of the tank wet, and not a drop more. They managed to let it run out and subsequently damaged the pump, which they had repaired by a local backstreet garage, who I think probably cracked some part of the tank receptacle for the pump housing. I discovered the problem shortly after buying it, but I was reluctant to take the car back in case they broke something else.

Hopefully yours will be an easier fix. If it's anything like working on the D2 system and you're thinking of attempting it yourself, prepare to spend several hours cramped up in the boot, high on petrol fumes, cursing and swearing with screwdrivers in one hand and an endoscope in the other.

That is a very odd but quite specific problem. Have you tried ringing a few Indies to see if they have an idea of what's up?

If you get as far as junction 8 (IKEA) next time, I'll bring you a coffee while you wait for the flatbed!

If you want it looked at while you're in Surrey you could do worse than Camspec in Crawley, close to Gatwick. Their faultfinding is pretty decent

On another note I think I will ba calling our forum owners on monday to see if they have a complete set of tank internals , both pumps .pipes ect.
I think theres too much going on to determine easily if there is a fault so I think best bet is replace the lot in one go.
It may not be the cheapest way to sort it but with workjng in surrey and just being home at the weekends I just need to get it sorted.
