Lightbulb Opening a can of worms...Discuss

Although I'm good as a spanner man and can find my way around most jobs on cars I know almost zilch about the diagnostics side of vehicles. I've been lucky with the Mercedes vehicles I have owned throughout the years that they have never given me much bother and I have never bothered purchasing any diagnostic equipment for them.

The Range Rover is a different kettle of fish and I really should buy some sort of kit for it, but so many to choose from and prices from a couple of hundred to £8k...What to choose, I really am not sure.

Now to the Audi, there are again various different applications to choose from and once again I am at a loss what I should be thinking of purchasing. What am I looking for? Well truth be told I would like an all singing all dancing bit of kit that even a dummy like me could operate without doing any harm, but in reality I doubt if I would be able to operate anything as complicated, so in reality I would like something that won't break the bank and will read and delete any codes as required and also find faults.

I would also like some sort of WSM if such an item exists, be it internet based or CD based I don't mind

Over to the experts for the answers...

Send me your email address, I can email you the AUDI A8 ´03 - Technical Features Self Study Programme 282, not a workshop manual per se, but it's a start

You need Elsawin for workshop manual, available easily and cheaply on Ebay albeit not genuine I'm quite sure, but it will serve you well. If you want to go legitimate, look up Bentley publishers. They do a licensed version of the A8 workshop manuals, but they're American and LHD, and so is the technical bias.

Vagcom / VCDS is what you need for diag codes.

You need the Canbus version for the D3. Hex +Can I think its called. Expect to pay around £200 for the unit.

Forget the cheap £15 units on ebay, they're a waste of time.

You *can* break things with Vagcom, but only if you go exploring....

Not sure if they work on CAN but my £8 ebay lead work just fine on D2 and I have done also 2004 A4 not sure if it is CAN or not.

Another thing to consider is VAS5054

1.Guided fault finding but this is limited if you do not have authorised access to Audi servers
2.Flashing control modules(ECU', TCU's ect) with updated software but some of the clone tools from e-bay do it others don't.

That e-bay listing does not say whether it is genuine tool so probably copy, also pictures show software version 18, it is now up to 19. An you do not really need a rugged laptop for personal use.

That's about first link.
