Its one of the cleanest looking 4.2 pre facelifts I've seen in a long time....

But - despite the usual advert claims, it has no factory options whatsoever.

No PDC. No Xenons, no blinds, no bose, no cruise control etc.

The S8, rightly or wrongly, is far more collectable, and will usually have a better spec on. You'll pay a bit more, but it will hold its value, if not potentially increase.

The 1997/1998 A8 4.2 has a gearbox code of DTD. I recall this well as we used to get asked daily for them as they seemed to be the least reliable of the lot, so as others have said - check / test the gearbox and warranty along with budgeting for a replacement in the mid to longer term.

This is a great classic, but for my money, a facelift A8/S8 would make a better every day car. A higher spec, and glass that lets mobile phone / gps signals through makes it far more useful in the real world - Just depends whether its a daily, or a weekender

Nice looking car, pretty cheap so if you have a higher budget, stash for the eventual repairs.

On the plus, it is in Ronin colours with nice wheels. If you are looking at the these cars and haven't driven one, go along and take it out, see what you think of it first, you might hate it, doubtful, but worth finding out before parting with cash.

Built 17th April 1998.

First registered with DVLA 11th January 1999

FL started production in October 1998, but there seemed to be plenty of PF cars to shift as I can't recall ever seeing a 1998 facelift, but there are a number of 1999 PF kicking about.

I think that Mike (ConanTheLibrarian) bought his Merlin Purple S8 from Northern Ireland, but surely its the same as buying from the rest of GB? just have to arrange to fly over there and then drive back on the ferry.

Ah, the joys of car buying in Northern Ireland!

Pretty much as Neil says. We're part of the UK, so you just have to factor in flight and ferry costs.

There are a few downsides we have to deal with. With regards to A8/S8s, we don't really have a great selection (usually 2.8s), so finding a 4.2 is unusual. We also tend to have to pay over the odds for second hand cars here, with forecourts really humping the price up. Car history is the biggest headache, as there's nothing available. The only online checks will show MOT history done in GB, there isn't any for NI.

The only other thing to do is make sure you register it with DVLA once you get it. My brother was working in London some years back and the tax on his van was due to expire. Because it was registered with DVLNI, they refused to tax it.

Lurgan is at the other end of the country from me, but Ameiseuk (Chris) lives around Belfast. Not sure if he has VCDS and would be willing to check it out for you, if you're really keen on it. No harm in asking. There are a couple of other members around that area who may also be willing to help, but can't remember their names right now.

The the other forum members I was thinking of are Ricky22buk (last posted November '16) and Chrisb (last posted April '16)

Should be a straight forward purchase in my view, as it has a UK number plate, so is probably already registered with the DVLA here. Northern Ireland do have their own registration numbers, and this is not one.
Hope this helps

Looks a nice car if the gearbox has been serviced.
Any service history would be a god send. You may find it has a service history from over here.

Good Luck

Seems to have a DVLA MOT history up to 2009 and a current (NI?) MOT up to October 2017 so hopefully no registration issues. Currently taxed to end of April.

Default Decisions

Hi All,

I think I need to focus a little so I'm looking for some direction and opinion!

I love the look of this and the low mileage but no sports seats - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...us=1500&page=1 - should I place so much importance on low mileage?

But then again, the D3s seems such good value - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...had=New&page=2

..... or should I just be sensible and think of the lower costs of a D2 2.8?

Some help to focus would be really helpful?

Thanks

Neil
