The breakdown is what I find strange.

£800 for the cambelt, but
£1200 per drive shaft, hmm OK, pricey but justifiable.
£1800 for the wishbones though
£1000 for each set of control arms!

£800 for the belt won't include any rollers or tensioners, and probably no water pump or thermostat either. You can easily double that price to do a 'proper job' at Audi rates.

You say that Adrian but Swindon Audi quoted me £864+vat to do the whole lot prior to giving me the whole lot for £100 (supported by Audi UK to make up for issues I'd had on my A7)

That's actually not that bad for the belt then! I might get mine done at the main dealer next year.

I just looked back at the history on mine and it was £881 incl VAT at a specialist, but excluding a water pump and thermostat

ETA - I had a quote back in April for getting mine done without replacing the rollers and tensioners. I've included the prices paid when it was done in 2010, but updated the parts prices where possible from the April quote. A full job could potentially be £1100 at these sorts of rates

Not doing the rollers and tensioners (since they've all only done 20k miles roughly) would make it £650ish

Wow!!! that is some serious cash!
If it makes you feel any better my S8 needed a ton of stuff done when I got it too.
For a very similar amount of money I had all this done (parts and labour):
- new front subframe
- all-round new Audi shocks and springs
- new rear ARB & arms
- cam belt, all rollers, water pump, thermostat, even eccentric idler
- aux belt and tensioner
- new power steering pump
- gearbox refurb, all new synchros and 1st + 2nd collars
- lower 6th gear
- clutch slave cylinder
- front discs, pads, used calipers bought and refurbed
- some coolant hoses
- SAI coded out and removed, rear lambdas coded out
- new brake fluid
- chain tensioner rail guides replaced
- cam cover gaskets replaced

Audis fixed price servicing for the A8 shows the cambelt and water pump price as 799 too

https://www.audi.co.uk/owners-area/s...-services.html

Their brake prices are cheaper than what my indie charged me for the same job.

Is the S Tronic gearbox oil change applicable to the D2?

S-tronic is the newer 7 speed flappy paddle box - which our S5 has - so not comparable. They're set up for frequent oil and filter changes and it's no more difficult than doing the engine oils, hence the cheap-ish price for doing it.

There are still D2s having mega work done through Audi dealers. I know of a PF 3.7, and a FL S8. Both one owner cars. You can get Audi to price match an indie quote anyway, so they're always going to be just as cheap.
