Strange. This morning the first time I started the car all was fine, but on the second I got the warning beeps.
I did a VCDS scan and it was clean as a whistle.

Subsequent starts had no warnings. It beeps as it "should" (as I've set it to) on locking and the alarm works when tested. (So that will be a code to clear next time)

I've no idea what the logic is, but this morning I got into the car to retrieve something.
While there I decided to turn the ignition on to see how the alarm behaved. All was quiet - for at least 10 seconds. Then I heard the 4 beeps!

I tried again a couple more times over the next few minutes and nothing untoward. A satisfying beep on locking on all occasions.

I'll just live with it as is for now.

Edit: Forgot to say, a full VCDS scan was as clean as a whistle. At least the failing (failed) batteries did trigger a low voltage warning, though far too late really.

Possible theory: The standby batteries had lost some voltage / not been fully charged and it took some time for the system to identify and then make the 4 beeps. Switching the ignition on provided some charge to the batteries sufficient to raise them above the "low battery" level - hence no beeps thereafter - I presume you switched the ignition off between attempts to recreate the situation?
Problem is unless we know the system logic then we are merely guessing.

Logic? Guessing? Indeed.
Having been away for over a week I started the S8 yesterday expecting something abnormal - no beeps, just a satisfying chirp when locking. Same this morning.

Default Lost ma Beep!

Having been away a week i returned home and thought that I would try out the "spare" horn unit offered to me by The Laird as he now has a working unit. Didnt work - no beeps on locking so put my old one back (which had been beeping - tho' v quietly) before I went away. Result = no beeps from the unit which had been working. Not even a quiet one. So whats gone wrong?
Has the unit been failing to charge the NiMH batteries? Are they needed in the circuit for the horn to beep? This should be SO simple. Any ideas? I am not goingto give up and buy a new unit.

One possibility is that you may also have a corroded plug and the frequent disconnecting and reconnecting has caused it to split like mine did. have a close look at the plug in the boot and let me know if you want to effect the patented Laird repair!

Today I replaced my "repaired" alarm as it was getting very weak - barely audible.

The replacement was a cheap chines "clone" though sold as original......

But it's silent.

Checking the voltages on the pins the old one has nearly 9v on the central pin, which is from the newish Maplin batteries I put inside (so they have charged OK).
The new one has nothing at all. Well a little brief flicker on the meter.

Being optimistic I'm hoping it's just discharged while "on the shelf", but does anyone know when it charges? Is it just when the ignition is on or will it recharge from the car battery when locked (which I somehow doubt)?

Does anyone happen to know what the 3 wires are for, I could then wire it up off the car and test it. It conveniently came with a connector plug and length of wire so that would be very easy.

Anyone know the answer to this, or if it's rechargeable off the car?

I did a short drive last night (20 mins or so) and left it in overnight. The centre pin now measures a measly 100mV or so, so there is definitely a battery of some sort in there.

I'm tempted to connect it up to a 12V DC supply across the centre pin and the one of the other two that gives the higher voltage reading to see if it charges up. This is the pin by the "squarer" end of the socket.
