Cheap mobile for WIFI hub
Im off abroad on holiday & want to take a spare phone with me & pay as you go sim card which i can use as a WIFI hub incase the hotels' wifi is crap or if i need to have access to the interweb while im out the hotel.
Anyone know which MEGACHEAP ebay phones would work as a wifi hub? Old HTC?? Old samsung? Old nokias??

You've got to watch using it tethered as most plans will stiff you for data.
I'd pick up a MiFi from 3, probably cost you about the same anyway.

yeah I use a 3 MiFi and its brilliant, never used it abroad though, so not sure what that would cost, you could always get it unlocked before you go then buy a PAYG data sim once you are abroad, guess that would work out cheaper

Never use data abroad on a UK phone / sim, it'll cost you about £5 per MB on a UK data plan.
Do as I do, and get a PAYG sim with data in the destination country. France can be tricky but not impossible to get a sim, I managed to get an Orange one a couple of years ago. Spain is the same, but again possible if the shop know their stuff. All Sim Cards in france and spain must be registered and traceable to a home or other address which can be UK, although in Spain they typically just register it to the shop address. France and Spain do not offer unlimited data plans on any network, instead prefering to offer a certain number of MB per day before the connection is throttled down from full 3G to a lesser speed.

I agree, DO NOT use UK sim abroad for data.
Just go to the nearest mobile shop and get your self a pay as you go sim with some data plan, local plan, local prices=no surprises I think most of the android (even the very early ones) got a hotspot function
